In 1818, George Washington visited Milford and recommended that it be annexed to Hartford because of its strong local economy and lack of competition from other towns within Hartford County. In 1825, the General Court granted approval for Milford to become a city with its own police department and fire Department. After years of growth and development – including incorporation as a borough in 1903 – Milford reached its peak as an incorporated city with over 100,000 residents by 1960. However, rapid economic decline following World War II led to declines in population throughout the 1970s and 1980s before stabilization around 2000 helped contribute to increased residential property values and more jobs throughout the community since then.

In 1824, when Connecticut became a state, Milford became one of its townships. In 1865, when parts of Vermont and Massachusetts were Combined into a new state called New York State, Milford remained a separate township within New York until it became part of Plainfield within Massachusetts following that state's merger with New York City in 1898. As rural farming declined during prohibition years (1892–1912) and World War II cut off most economic opportunities for many people living in small towns throughout America due toicken rationing policies instituted by Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal government), increasing numbers of people moved into larger cities or out onto fulltime jobs outsideof their homes starting around 1960s as more people discovered an expanding market for services provided by professional managers who could provide more centralized control over lives than existed before large metropolitan areas had emerged as major cultural centers across America where businesses could be found concentrated along arterial streets like Fifth Avenue or Park Avenue downtowns close to popular tourist attractions such as Madison Square Garden or Yankee Stadium or Times Square
