Milford, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 20,716 at the 2010 census. Milford has been home to gun safes for over 350 years and has one of the oldest gun safe manufacturers in the country. In 1828, Nicholas-Jacques de La Fayette founded the De LaFayette Arsenal in present-day Milford with the goal of producing pistols for American soldiers. This production continued until 1873 when an order from President Ulysses S. Grant led to the closure of the plant. Gun safes began to be produced in Milford again starting in 1905 by Henschel & Co.. From 1906 through 1909, Des Moines Tool and Machine Company manufactured pistols and rifles at a new factory on Main Street in present day Hartford Township. In 1922, Colt Corporation acquired Henschel & Co.'s pistols business and continue development of firearms manufacturing hereunder into today's Colt National Firearms Manufacturing Inc.. Today pistol production continues out of two plants - one located near downtown Hartford and another just outside Milford – both employing about 150 workers who produce more than fifty brands of handguns including Sig Sauer (.22lr), Glock (9mm), Smith & Wesson (6x19mm) and Beretta (Pistol).
