Milford, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 19,869 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Hartford County after Easton. The name Milford means "a meadow by the stream" and its motto is "Onward to Bethlehem." The first permanent settler in what would become Milford was Nicholas Willard who arrived from Massachusetts in 1764. He set out from Saybrook, Connecticut on a footpath leading northwest from Hartford to Watertown, then northeast to Norwich and finally west to Milford. From this location he surveyed and laid claim to much of what would become Milford Township (now part of Hartford). In 1795 John Morse located a gristmill on the north bank of the brook that became known as Morse Mill Pond. This mill powered an early stage railway line between New Haven and Hartford which began service in 1814. In 1872 the world's first hydroelectric power plant was built at Branicken Falls east of present-day Unionville; it provided electricity for local homes and businesses until 1948 when it was replaced by an electric grid connection. The town seal dated February 12th, 1798 shows three farmers carrying bundles of hayricks across a pond near where Main Street meets West Road today. There were no water rights available until 1800 so there may have been other mills or ponds used for this purpose prior to this date though no evidence exists for them! The first schoolhouse in what would become Milford opened on Monday September 21st, 1801 with 11 students attending morning classes before evening sessions started two days later on Tuesday October 1st under state funding courtesy of Governor Jonathan Trumbull who visited the school site himself! A new frame building with a large belfry was erected on land donated by Ebenezer Cole in 1808 which served as both school and courthouse until burned down in 1892 during an epidemic that swept through townships east of downtown Hartford! A series of fires destroyed many buildings including churches over time leaving little hope for reconstruction so one approach taken was replacement by monte Carlo style brick buildings built beginning around 1870 which remain extant today as part of Route 202’s Olde Towne section! On July 6th 1912 residents voted unanimously to change their name from “Hartford” back to “Milford” after more than 130 years being residents thereof! After decades serving primarily as grocery store (1905), hospital (1927), fire station (1948) & community center (2000), it reopened as First Congregational Church Sunday School Office November 15th 2002 having outgrown previous facilities originally designed only for religious use (!).

In 2014-2015 Milford approved an $8 million dollar bond issue for building projects such as new schools and parks across the township including beautification projects at Main Street Park and Holyoke Square
