Milford's first courthouse was built on Adams Street in 1810 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by a fire. In 1834, the town became a borough and then incorporated as a village in 1903. In 1962 it became a town again after being merged with neighboring Watertown.[2] The towns of Watertown and Danbury were also founded early in this history but both towns did not become large enough to support their own municipalities until after Milford had grown strong within its own borders. Today, apart from some small businesses located near the downtown core of each town (Danbury has since annexed portions of West Haven), all other commercial activity takes place outside of Milford proper[3]. This largely due to its smaller size relative to contemporaries Danbury and Watertown - both of which have populations over 100,000 residents - as well as its location along Interstate 95 (I-95) which makes it easily accessible by car or public transportation from most parts of the country. Additionally, despite having only 15%of the population as compared to neighboringWatertown’s 80%, Milford has managed to maintain high levels of civic engagement and pride dating back to its earliest days; indeed, many aspects of community life are still governed by committee or board form rather than through elected officials like those found in larger communities.
Milton, England was first settled in the area now known as Milford, Connecticut by the Puritans in 1624. The town of Hartford was founded in 1736, and became a state capital in 1818.
