In 1885–1886 Charles Aderholt erected a large brick courthouse on Main Street opposite Ives Fine Arts Center which still stands today as one ofHartfords largest surviving landmarks. The first Europeans to visit what is now Milford were two Spanish traders, Hernando de Soto and Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, on their way from Mexico City to found new land in 1524. They named the area "New Spain" after their newly discovered land. In 1614 an Englishman by the name of John Smith landed with his party on Long Island Sound and explored much of what is now Connecticut. He called this area "New England". In 1624–25 General Monmouth led an army against King Philip II of Spain at Saratoga Springs in New York State. After Monmouth's victory over Spanish forces near Saybrook Bridge, he moved northward into Connecticut Valley where he founded Hartford Township on May 12, 1626. On July 9, 1638 Samuel Putnam granted a charter for Yale College (later Princeton University). On October 14th, 1812 Edward Everett gave his famous address at Yale Law School in which he urged American expansionism; it has been said that this speech helped spur America's entry into World War I. In 1820 Norwich became part of Congregationalists and within a few years had become one of the largest towns in Munster County with a population of 3200 people as well as being served by three churches: First Congregationalist (Norwich), Second Congregationalist (Norwich), and Old North Church (Norwich). One hundred years later Norwich still has two churches serving its community: First Unitarian Universalist (founded 1905) and Second Unitarian Universalist (founded 1971). During World War II most residents were evacuated to other parts of Connecticut due to air raids but some remained until 1945 when hostilities ended. Today there are only a few scattered houses remaining from before World War II including one located in downtown Norwich which once housed Norwegians who had fled during wartime bombings!
