Middletown, Connecticut is a town located in the Hartford-West Hartford School District, in the U.S. state of Connecticut. The population was 21,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Milford-Bridgeport metropolitan area. Middletown has been inhabited by Native Americans since 1639 when English settlers first arrived. The name "Middletown" is derived from Middle Dutch meidenhof (meaning "meadow between two houses"), meaning "a place where people were living and making their livelihoods." The first permanent settler in Middletown was Joseph Bicknell who arrived on October 17, 1639 with his family from Ipswich, Suffolk, England. He and his wife Hannah founded a small community called "Bicknell's Valley". In 1646 Bicknell sold his land to Abraham Saltonstall for £200 and moved to what is now Middletown Township. By 1700 Middletown had about 100 inhabitants and by 1800 it had grown to over 300 residents. The first school in Middletown was organized on December 8, 1814 by Reverend John Morse as an academy under the direction of Dr Samuel Morse Sr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. At that time there were only three schools in Connecticut: Stratford-on-Avon (now Bridgeport), Yale and Trenton; all of which taught children from 3 years old through 12th grade inclusive In 1828 Samuel Morse Jr., father of James Morse Sr., opened a flour mill in what are now Derby Street and Water Street near present day Union Avenue and State Street; this mill would become one of the largest employers in town with over 100 employees manufacturing flour until its closure in 1916 In 1869 Isaac Whitney opened Whitney's grocery store on current day Court Road which became one of Middletown’s leading businesses for more than 50 years On July 4, 1907 during a heat wave caused by drought conditions Governor George Peabody issued a proclamation calling for all citizens to come together for patriotic parade on Main Street between Capitol Hill and Yankee Stadium . On September 5th over 1,000 citizens took to Main Street including many women who participated wearing headdresses made outof newspapers Theodore Roosevelt delivered his inauguration address from Constitution Hall just steps away from Main Street where he sat down behind President Taft During prohibition era many local businesses closed their doors due to prohibition laws but several such as Whitney’s grocery reopened after repeal After World War II many factories closed throughout Connecticut but some such as White Motor Company continued operations until they shuttered around 1960 or 1961
