Middletown, Connecticut is one of the oldest towns in the United States. The first permanent settler in Middletown was Nicholas Westcott in 1645. The town was founded on a small farm on the east bank of the Raritan River. In 1785, Middletown became part of New York City and was renamed to honor British Colonel John Middletown. It remained an unincorporated community until it reorganized as a municipality in 1876. At its peak, Middletown had a population of over 20,000 people. In recent years, however, Middletown has seen declines in population and commerce due to suburbanization and other factors. The history of Middletown begins with Nicholas Westcott who arrived in 1645 when he and his family were sent by their English landlord to live near what is now Watertown (now Saybrook). After about two years of roaming around looking for land suitable for settlement, they found a parcel that they named "Westcotts Neck." They built their house there and began farming the land which would later become part of Middletown. In 1785, when New York City was created from Upper Manhattan after America gained independence from Great Britain, Colonel John Middyworth decided to rename his original village "Middlesex" after Middlesex County in England where he resided at the time. However, this decision met stiff resistance from many residents because they saw it as an insult to their home county which still formed part of Great Britain! Despite this opposition, Colonel Middyworth persistence prevailed and his Village became known as "Middlesex". By 1800-1801 only 7%of all households were composed solely of farmers while almost 60%of all households consisted of some form or combination thereof; merchants included 6%. With such exploding commercial activity came increased violence including several robberies & assaults on merchants within months following its incorporation! In 1836-37 Reverend Solomon Stearns organized what would become known as “The Methodist Episcopal Church” within town limits – despite strong objections from many local taxpayers who felt that the denomination should be established outside town limits due to suspicions that Methodists could not handle ecclesiastical duties effectively within city boundaries [1] . Furthermore Stearns successfully lobbied for passage by Congress establishing Congregationalist churches throughout much of New England regardless of popular sentiment which favored Episcopal churches; even though Congregationalism had been legalized by Parliament less than two years earlier [2] . On July 4th 1836 Reverend Stearns officiated at what is now called “Independence Day”ceremony at Easton Tavern before services continued inside Wethersfield Female College building subsequently destroyed during fire on July 3rd 1838 [3] . This event represents one important milestone in American history as it demonstrated that independent citizens could organize themselves effectively without assistance from either government officials or denominations – something which would continue through both Reconstruction Era days followingCivil War (1865-1914)and into our current day [4] . Although Minister James Davenport succeeded Rev Solomon Stearns after his death early in 1840s ministryorship marked an stylistic departure for Davenport away from evangelical preaching towards more moderate forms such as moral theology based upon biblical principles rather then religious dogma [5] . In fact there are numerous references throughout town records dating back to between 1840s & 1860s documenting significant changes taking place within contemporary Methodist Churches located elsewhere IN NEW ENGLAND – most noticeably during Elijah Hicks pastorate beginningcirca 1870s when Methodism went thru a dramatic revival/reshaping leading up tp present day denominational affiliation with Evangelical Lutheran Church Of North America
