Middletown, Connecticut is a small town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Haven–Milford–Ansonia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Middletown is located about 15 miles (24 km) south-southwest of downtown Hartford and about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Stamford. The first permanent settler in what became Middletown was Nicholas Higginson in 1636. In 1795, Orley Purdy founded a large farm on the site which he called "Purdy's Hill". Purdy descendant John A. Purdy organized the first school in 1831 and built a house on it which still stands today as the original Middletown Academy building. The name "Middletown" originated with one of its early settlers, Caleb Merrill who named it after his home town of Middleton upon Thames in England. WhenHartford city limits were established on April 1, 1820 by act of state legislators, Middletown became part of that city and continued to be so until November 3rd 1898 when it reverted back to Hartford County under an act passed by the General Assembly without concurrent vote by the people due to land acquisition within that county for new cities and towns within it during that period including MiddletOWN! On October 9th 1908 Hartford voters approved annexing much larger portions of Westchester County making Middletown again a part of Hartford County! Finally effective January 1st 1961 all vestiges of municipal government ceased operations with residents being automatically annexed into neighboring townships! Today nearly all citizens are either residents or visitors living primarily within their respective township boundaries
