In 1768, Increase Mather discovered coal mines at Northfield and began to develop them into a town. Coal production continued until 1800 when it declined due to competition from new oil drilling rigs operating out of New York City. In 1837, Kirtland Woolen Company bought all the land east of Main Street for $10 per acre and developed it into the present day city limits around what is now First Congregational Church (the original church). At that time there were only a few homes and businesses within city limits while most people lived outside of it on farms or scattered around rural areas near Hartford central business district (CBD). By 1860 there were over 1,000 residents living within city boundaries with over 50% being inside one mile of CBD while outsideof it they constituted only 2%. After decades of decline due to oil depletion natural gas drilling opened up along Long Island Sound making MiddletOWN once again potential economic center for northeastern CT thanks to its proximity to both markets plus its easy access to transportation via railroads which made accessing other parts of Connecticut very affordable. However this period also saw increasing crime rates throughout Hartford County creating social problems for many residents which interventionist government policies had no answer for In 1984 Hartford's largest employer - GEICO - moved their headquarters from Stamford/West Haven after seventy years in that location creating some 1 million jobs across Connecticut including 100% employment within one mile radius of downtown Hartford CBD creating new opportunities for those located within city boundaries but still having limited access to benefits enjoyed by employees located outside urban cores such as Westville/East Windsor or Enfield/Norwalk This influx created increased housing prices throughout much selection cities like Greenwich Village NY City Limitsphiladelphia Brooklyn etc., exacerbating existing inequality between innercity dwellers enjoying high quality public schools tuition free private colleges etc., while suburbanites struggling with housing costs & little access eitherto quality education or affordable job opportunities
