Middletown, Conn. is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 14,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of theHartford-Worchester-Bridgeport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Middletown was established in 1664 by Sir George Carteret and his crew on the wharf at New Haven Harbor as part of their exploration of the region for new land to settle. In 1714 John Winthrop, writing from Middletown about his experiences as a settler there two years earlier, noted that "the people hereabouts are so contented with their present condition that they cannot be induced to leave it." Middletown became an incorporated town on March 3, 1813. The first post office was established in Middletown on October 1, 1812 under the name of Northampton. On July 10, 1821, it changed its name to Middletown after James Kestrel (1775-1850), an early settler who had purchased land in that area from proprietors of Newtowne Hall estate near Hartford. In 1850–51 Gouverneur Morris visited Middletown and its environs during his explorations of western Connecticut as part of his effort to determine if public lands could be made available for purchase through the process known then as homesteading. Morris found many potential buyers for some 640acre (258 ha) parcel he offered but no one took him up on it; instead he developed what became known as Eastern State Park across from Hartford's Freedom Trail Museum today.
