The town was originally a small hamlet on the edge of the then-new towns of Hartford and New Britain. In 1801, Middletown became a village and in 1836, it was incorporated as a city. Today, Middletown has a population of over 100,000 people and is the economic center of southern Connecticut. The first settlers to come to MiddletOWN were English Puritans who had moved from London to Watertown in 1664. They set up shop on what is now Washington Street in what is now downtown MiddletOWN. By 1702, the town had developed into an upscale community with shops, churches and a school system. In 1786, when MiddletOWN went commercial for the first time, it attracted attention from Boston capitalists looking for land near their manufacturing plants in that city. One such capitalist was John Collins who donated land that forms today's northeastern corner of Main Street between Clinton Avenue and Broad Streets in MiddletOWN proper (now called Allston) back then called "Collins Corner." In 1801-1812 Hartford changed hands multiple times due to Revolutionary War hostilities between Great Britain and America; during this time many citizens fled to Canada or other points north because they could not live under British rule anymore. As a result of this political instability several buildings located at Main Street & Clinton Avenue were destroyed by fire during these years; however all rebuilt soon afterwards! During this time period also several mills opened up along either side of Main Street & Clinton Ave., some still operating today including: Bemis’s Mills (founded 1812), Whitney’s Mills (1815), Morse Bros “Morse” Cotton Mill (1820), Brown & Wigglesworth’s cotton mill built 1822/23 (renamed Hickey Cotton Mill after its founder Samuel Hickey). These early textile mills helped drive development along Main Street (& Clinton Ave.) eventually creating entire blocks bounded by those streets today! Today there are over 40 different businesses operating within walking distance of each other on Main Street (& Clinton Ave.), making it one of Connecticut’s most vibrant cities! Some notable events that took place while MiddLETOWN was thriving include: -The Battle Of Long Island Bridge fought July 7th 1862 between American Union forces led by General George McClellan against Confederate Generals Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson resulted in an inconclusive stalemate; McClellan later recommended that Springfield be moved from Boston closer to New York City so he could better monitor British movements across Long Island - Springfield ultimately remained at Middleton until 1865 when it too became part of New York City -Midsummer Day celebrations held every year since 1660 featuring processions around campus followed by open fireside chats enjoyed by everyone before dinner Thursday night - these days are more commonly known as "Pumpkin Fest" events
