Downtown features an assortment of century-old storefronts, several restaurants and bars, two theaters (the Fox Theater on State Street and the Elmira Playhouse), four banks (Hartford Trust Company, Citizens National Bank, PNC Bank & Trust Company, First American Bank) and three post office buildings which house a variety of businesses including a health club/recreational center/golf course; two large shopping centers: One with over 150 stores near Main Street called "Center Plaza" while another much larger development called " Valley Fair Mall" anchors what used to be Center Plaza redevelopment. The town also includes numerous small parks such as Park Hill Park across from Main Street where apples are grown for cider production; Green Acres Race Course off Interstate 95 about 1 mile south of downtown; Andover Cemetery just east of downtown; some smaller villages include Merrick Farms to the north-west along I-95 (a major corn milling operation once operated here) and West Hartford annexed in 1901 which had no municipal government until 1977 when it merged with Middletown. From its early days through World War II when it became an important manufacturing center for munitions plants in Connecticut,[1] Middletown was known for its clothiers who specialized in making towels.[2] A large percentage of these operations were closed down during the Great Recession but they have been slowly restarted since then with newel posts affixed to some old looms to create modern day weaving facilities[3]. Nonresidential construction resumed after 2009 following a memorandum signed by Mayor Byron Whelan[4]), Treasurer Rebecca Bendixen[5], City Manager Edward Fenton[6]and Planning Administrator Lisa Kapperer that calls for "…a more diverse mix [of housing types] throughout town".[7][8][9] Many former textile mills have been turned into apartment complexes or other Light commercial uses while others have been repurposed into museums or art galleries. Recently Middletown voted not to annex West Hartford which would have added another municipality 2 miles east along I-95 with a population exceeding 100000 people making it one of only five towns in Connecticut over this size without any form of government oversight or management.[10][11][12][13][14] This unusual situation exists because all other towns in CT meeting this criterion either have state run governments like Bridgeport or they are unincorporated villages governed by their individual communities members like Danbury or Stamford whose jurisdiction overlaps with those of neighboring towns like Milford or Derbyville

It has a history that goes back to 1663 when English colonists arrived in what is now Middletown, CT. At that time, the area was known as Yarmouth Plantation and consisted of only a few buildings and several acres of land. The original settlers were made up of people from England who were looking for a new home after their country's defeat at the hands of Spain in the American Revolution. They were referred to as "The New Englanders." In 1814, President James Ketchum announced that he would move all U.S.-owned property within three miles (5 km) of Greenwich Village so that it could be used for public education purposes under Section 8of the Morrill Land Grant Act (1862). Middletown was chosen as one of twelve towns within three miles (5 km) to receive this land grant which opened up many opportunities for growth and development within Middletown itself as well as much surrounding territory including Norwalk and Bridgeport. In 1875, local resident Wm Hickey donated land on which today's First Baptist Church building stands; also built on this site were two schoolhouses – one from 1877 and another from 1889 – both demolished in 1905 due to falling water levels caused by heavy rains during an unusually wet winter season! The townspeople responded enthusiastically to Ketchum's offer and quickly began making plans for what would become their new town center; they cleared away any trees or brush that may have been standing in their way and developed a plan that included creating a square mile (1 km2) around their new central business district or CBD! This area now includes parts of downtown Middletown as well as numerous blocks northward along Main Street which still bear traces of early development - such as evidence left behind by earlier stagecoach travelers who stopped here on their way between Hartford & Stamford! In 1871, yet another donation allowed construction on what became known as "The Queen's Chapel" – later renamed First Baptist Church – to begin immediately adjacent to The brick courthouse/judge’s office complex which still stands today; also constructed on this site were two additional schoolhouses: One from 1895 and another from 1899! Middlesex County actually acquired more land southward towards Norwalk through purchase agreements with other towns within its boundaries but because Yarmouth Plantation layadjacenttoMidlandsCounty line until 1784 when it was divided into East Lyme Townshipand West Lyme TownshipthetownsdoubleditselfbyadditionsofSouthNorwalkuntilitbegantoexistonlyasMidsetTownshipin1912.–aneventuallyabsorbedintoNorwalkCityonMay25thofthatyear. After incorporation into Norwalk City on May 25th 1912, Middlesex County slowly withdrew its support for Yarmouth Plantation beyond providing shared services such as trash removal etc., while maintaining ownership rights over some vital parcels including Priestley Brook which flows through Yarmouth Estate into East Lyme Creek where it joins Long Island Sound–a potential source for water supply for Norwich city should problems arise with fresh water supplies near Great Falls? However these concerns seem never to have arisen… until recent years when environmental concerns about groundwater depletion have once again forced concern among some residents about possible future impacts upon Upper Long Island Sound if significant changes are not made soon!
