Middletown is situated on the banks of the Raritan River and is bordered by Norwich to the east, Groton to the north, and West Hartford to the west. The name "Middletown" first appeared in 1635 as a place called Littlebrooks near Newtown in now Bridgeport Township. That same year, John Winthrop compiled a list of towns in Connecticut which were to be named after Governors of Massachusetts Bay (now Boston). One entry on that list was for Middletown where “Sir Nicholas Gurney” had been Governor from 1629-1634 and his brother Sir John Gurney from 1635-1638. In 1641, Middletown incorporated as a town under an act of the General Court of Connecticut underthe name: "Newtown". In 1784, Increase Mather recommended that all Congregational churches within ten miles (16 km) of New London be consolidated into one body with seats at Ridgefield and Waterford so that services could be conducted more conveniently from those two locations. The new church was built at what is now Middletown Center and opened in 1802. The original church building still stands today and serves as headquarters for many local organizations including Chamber Of Commerce & Industry; First Church Of Christ Scientist; Friends Meeting House & School; YWCA/YMCA; United Way; Hartford Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus;; Holyoke Museum

Middletown, Connecticut is a small town located in the town of East Middletown, Connecticut. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It was first settled in 1635 and became a part of Hartford Township. In 1824 it became a part of Middletown and in 1826 it became incorporated as a city. The first settler in MiddletOWN was Nicholas Morse who arrived on October 3, 1635 from Hartford County, Connecticut with his family. Morse built what is now the First Methodist Church on Main Street and started to trade with other settlers near by. By 1748 there were over 20 people living in the village which consisted of about six houses and three hundred acres of land. In 1824, when Hartford Township split off fromHartford County to form its own independent government, MiddletOWN voters chose to become a part of that new township. The citizens voted to name their city after General Samuel Higginson who died while serving as Mayor of Hartfordville during the War for Independence (1812-14). When Hartford Township merged into Derby County in 1888, MiddletOWN retained its own charter and mayoralty until 1889 when those offices were combined with those of mayor and recorder within the newly formed City Department under Mayor Wadleigh Amesbury. From then on until 1922 when it merged into Eastchester Borough as part of that borough’s establishment, MiddletOWN had its own elected officials including two mayors; one from 1892-1900 & one from 1912-16 (Avery Cushing being the last mayor before annexation). On July 15th 1908, following an order from President Theodore Roosevelt which established New York Statehood for all Utooslsland except Long Island & Westchester County subject only to New York City rule without any representation for villages or towns within those limits;MiddlesontOWN passed an ordinance granting voting rights to women residents thereof; this act remains record as one of only two municipalities in America giving voting rights exclusively to women until passage by both Houses Of Congress fourteen years later – making her first femaleMayor along with Charlene Kapp (D) NYC’s current Mayor Bloomberg - Making her also America’s first openly Socialist Mayor since 1917! After years of consolidation with other cities through annexations,[1]MiddlesontOWN reached its peak population numbering 2,898 at the 2000 census[2]With shrinking revenues due largely to increases in gas taxes[3],the loss of manufacturing jobs throughout much OF Conn.,and rising costs associated WITH vehicle ownership rates;MiddlesontOWN has incurred significant financial difficulty throughout much OF Conn., culminating In 2011 With A “Fiscal Emergency designation” rating by THE CENTURY CONNECTICUT FINANCIAL GROUP.[4]; however recent council efforts have resulted In increasing revenue streams which are now keeping city afloat albeit barely
Middletown is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 19,532 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Hartford County and the second-largest municipality inHartford County after West Hartford. Middletown was first settled by English colonists in 1686. The original name of the town was "Newington". In 1814 it changed its name to Middletown because of the increase of immigrants from Hungary who were settling there. The area that now forms Middletown was first settled by English colonists in 1686 as part of what is now Hartford Township. On March 12, 1784, a group of settlers led by Capt John Morse arrived at what is now Easton Avenue and North Street and claimed land that had been ceded to them by Hendrick Hudson during King George III's War with France. On October 10, 1785, they voted to change their name to Middletown after General James Montgomery who helped lead their forces during the war against British troops under General Sir Henry Clinton. In 1814, when New England became an American state, Middletown became one of many towns incorporated within Hartford County as part of an effort to create a more unified region around the new nation. With growth came suburbanization and development along Route 6 until it reached its current form on Main Street east of downtown which opened up space for businesses on both sides of Main Street between 1830 and 1860 when this section formed what are today called historic West Windsor Village and Newtown Square neighborhoods on lower Main Street between Walnut Hill Road (now Ridgehill Road) and South Prospect Avenue (now Ruggles Boulevard). According to the 2010 U.S. Census report, 20%of all households were below poverty line while 38% were above poverty line including 43% who were living below 200%Of median income there were no differences among racial or ethnic groups although Hispanics made up 11%of all residents while whites made up 73%.
