It is bordered by Derby to the north, Norwich to the east, and West Hartford to the south. The first settlers in what would become Middletown were Quakers who arrived in 1664 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They named their new settlement after Meeting House Hill, near which they had seen an assembly of religious leaders oneday while on their way to consult with Indians about settling land northwest of Hartford. The town originally consisted of only a few homes and lots and was known as "Tinton Falls". In 1792, when Hogsback Hill was acquired by Middletown from John Glover for $1 million dollars (equal to $100 million today), it became one of the largest tilling areas in New England. In 1820, John Morse donated 3 acres (0.8 km2) of his land northeast of present-day Middletown for use as a public square; this donation forms what are now Center Street, North Federal Lane and South Federal Lane. Morse also contributed money towards construction of two churches – First Congregational Church located on North Federal Lane and Second Congregational Church located on South Federal Lane – both designed bybuilder Nathaniel Bacon Jr.. In 1878–79 during an economic recession that hit most northeastern towns hard due to decreased farming output due to changes in technology such as railroads coming into operation, members of Middletown's first Select Board met at Morse's home for inspiration about how best to cope with conditions that seemed hopelessly outOf reach for many other residents then living within walking distance from Main Streets in downtownHartford or Stamford Bridge outside Danbury or Easton outside Ashburnham Centerfield . After much discussion it was decided that since there were no schools open within 2 miles (3 kilometers) radius where children could learn basic skills such as reading and writing there must be some form Of educational institution open within those boundaries until something better could be found. Accordingly selectmen organized a school board which met at Carpenter's Hall every Monday night until 1840 when meeting rooms opened up on Norwalk Avenue between Commercial Street and Whitehall Road instead because selectmen felt that Norwalk Avenue would provide more privacy than Carpenter's Hall did given its location close to downtownHartsford despite protests from business owners who felt their property would be violated should classes meet there). He also planted some 300 trees on acres that now form parts of both sides of Main Street between Watertown Road and School House Road. Reverend Morse' home still stands today on Meetinghouse Hill overlooking downtown MiddletOWN In 1784, James Kieft purchased about 50 acres west of where Main Street intersects Potter Rd., land that would later become known as West Hartford Township. The name "Middletown" derives from the word "mideast," which means "middle of the earth." The first settler in what is now Middletown was Nicholas Metcalfe. The town began to form around 1795 when farmers started moving into the area from New England and upstate New York. At that time, there were no public schools in Middletown, so students traveling to other towns would take public transportation to get to school. In 1810, a new school building was erected on High Street and named for Increase Mather, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. In 1815, a Baptist church was built on Main Street and named for President George Washington. In 1830, Middletown became part of Hartford County and grew rapidly because it served as an important center for commerce and education during Hartford's boom period after becoming a statehood movement stronghold following ratification of the Ulysses S Grant Proclamation creating Connecticut on November 4th (the same day Maryland became an independent state). During this time period many famous people lived or worked here including Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., James Kappeler (founder of Kappeler & Co.), Ezra Cornell (founder of Cornell University), Elijah Howe (presidential candidate), Ahasuerus Crane (a delegate to Philadelphia's Constitutional Convention) and more... during this time also much progress was made with regards to electric lighting which came about thanks largely to Isaac Babcock whose fathers store provided some lightbulbs for Edison’s laboratory soon thereafter!
