Middletown was founded in 1638 by John Deacon and his wife Judith. The town is named after the Middletown River, which ran through it. It became a borough in 1868. In 1960, Middletown merged with the neighboring towns of Easton and West Hartford to form the city of Hartford.

Middletown was first settled by English colonists in 1636 when they arrived on what is now the corner of Main Street and Elm Street. In 1716, Middletown became one of four towns chartered as part of Hartford Colony under charter from King George II. Just over a century later, in 1814, Middletown became the capital of Connecticut colony following the state's admission into Confederation as a new nation with an expanded territory. The town Proper began to form gradually during this time with many Ohia (native) families moving totown while others were drawn by opportunities for land ownership or commerce withinits boundaries. One important early resident was David Stockbridge who served as Mayor from 1792-1800 and also donated land for a Congregational church and school near what would become Greenmount Cemetery today. When Yale University moved to New Haven in 1837, much of downtown Stamford changed hands with residents advocating for keeping their historic district including approximately two blocks between State Street and Elm Avenue known as "the heart of Middletown". A fire destroyed much business activity along Elm Avenue on May 4th 1871 coinciding with Yale's bicentennial year; however interest in keeping downtown unchanged waned over time leading to demolition beginning in 1906 concurrent with construction that would create several large blocks across Elm Avenue called "Queen Square" today which houses mostly retail businesses while still retaining someOld Yale buildings such as Old College House and Chancellor's Residence MiddletOWN has experienced significant growth throughout recent years due both to its location within walking distance of numerous cultural attractions as well as its rapidly developing infrastructure which includes several high-tech startups incubated at various colleges/universities located just down the street - making it one of America’s most vibrant cities for tech companies

Middletown is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,362 at the 2010 census. Middletown is the principal town of the Middletown–WestHartford Micropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the east bank of the Raritan River and is bordered by West Hartford to the north, New London to the east, Fairfield to the south and Easton to the west. The first European settlement in what is now Middletown was made in 1638 by Jonas Alden when he and his family were granted a land grant from Governor John Winthrop. The town was named for Christopher Wetherall, 1st Baron Dartmouth who had died in 1635. In 1764, General Israel Putnam moved his headquarters from Dunstable to Middletown after victory over British forces at Saratoga battlefield. The village of Newtown which had been founded near Putnam's headquarters became part of Hartford after that battle. A post office called Newtown was established in 1764, but it was discontinued in 1802. In 1814-15 during one of America's most bitter wars with Great Britain known as "the Napoleonic Wars", Middletown residents took up arms against their British occupiers and successfully repelled an invasion attempt by Colonel Arthur Wellesley III. On July 6th, 1860 – three days before American Civil War began – Union general George McClellan arrived at Middletown on horseback with orders to march through it into WestHartford on July 14th; but local residents greeted him with gunfire instead and McClellan retreated without enteringMiddlesexetOWN! On October 12th 1861 Abraham Lincoln signed an ordinance creating Hartford County including all present within its borders; this included all present within what are now eastern New London Township (northwest corner of Fairfield County) as well as much of what is now western Windsor Township (southwest corner of Hartford County).MiddlesexetOWN remained an unincorporated hamlets until its incorporation into Town on May 7th 1907 following ratification of a referendum conducted by both Townsend organizations - separate communities having existed since colonial times!
