The town of Middletown was organized in 1638 and named for Nicholas-Jacques de Middletown, an English gentleman who had settled there in 1635. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Wigglesworth, who arrived in 1638. The town grew rapidly during the eighteenth century, and by 1792 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1814 Middletown became a part of Hartford County; but despite this change in location, the community continued to grow until it reached its peak at about 2,000 people in 1830. By 1840 Middletown had become an important commercial center with a large manufacturing sector. However, during the American Civil War the town sustained great damage from Confederate forces and lost many properties including most of its industrial infrastructure. After the war petroleums became a major industry in Middletown but declined after World War II}; nevertheless, local businesses continue to be active into the present day
