The town's growth began with the opening of the Hartford Railroad in 1836 which connected Middletown to Hartford. Businesses grew as people traveled to find employment on the railroad. A post office was established in 1839, and by 1850, there were over 100 businesses in Middletown. The population reached 10,000 by 1870 and 25,000 by 1900. During World War I (1914-18), many residents served in the military including Colonel James Lusk who commanded Third Brigade of Connecticut National Guard at Saybrook Heights near Stamford Bridge until he was fatally wounded defending Allied forces against an attack from German troops on April 15th 1916; Major General Edwin Sanger who commanded First Brigade of Connecticut National Guard at Groton Heights from 1915-16; Lieutenant Colonel Walter Hickey commanding Second Brigade of Connecticut National Guard at Watertown from 1917-19; Captain George Waddell commanding Fifth Regiment (Conn.) Infantry during WWI; Captain Augustus Davenport commanding First Regiment (Conn.) Infantry during WWII) In 1951 Mayor James Jaffe appointed Drs Alvin Purdy and Milton Cramer to serve on a three-member Board of Health which became known as 'The Medical Advisory Committee'. Drs Purdy and Cramer were responsible for setting up animal hospitals throughout New London County while also helping develop new medical treatments such as antibiotics which revolutionized medicine during that time period
