Meriden is a town in Connecticut, United States. It is located in the eastern portion of the state, on the Meriden River. The population was 28,527 at the 2010 census. As of 2018, it is part of the Hartford-New Haven-Bridgeport metropolitan area. The town was settled by English colonists in 1664 and named for Sir John Meriden who had been killed during the Battle of Long Island in 1574. The first settler to arrive was John Alden who built a cabin on what is now Main Street in 1665. In 1799, James Macklin bought land from Amos Kendall and began to build a house on what is now Meetinghouse Hill which he called "Macklin's Camp". In 1812, Colonel Thomas Paine founded Griggs Academy School which remains one of Meriden's most well known institutions today. The first store opened in 1814 when Nicholas Fenton bought goods from Ebenezer Dodge and name changed it to "Fenton's Store". A post office was established at Meriden in 1826 and remained open until 1916 when it moved to Bridgeport. The first school principal was Drury Hetherington who served from 1830–1834 and again from 1840–1856; then Revd Samuel Morse who served from 1860–1866 before becoming pastor at Grace Episcopal Church where he continued until his death in 1896. After Hetherington's death, Reverend Charles Coffin took over as Principal until 1893 when Revd Augustus Kelley becamePrincipal for two years before retiring due to ill health In 1902 Mrs Jane Addams purchased land adjacent to Griggs Academy School which she renamed "Meriden Girl’s High School" after her daughter Mary Addams .In 1924 this school became "Stuyvesant High School" after merging with an existing high school on nearby Union Avenue . meriden central library meriden post office meridan fire department
