Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 20,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–Worcester Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Meriden" first appears on maps in 1640 as Meriden Plantation and then again in 1663 as Messenheim Plantation. The area now known as Meriden was first settled by English colonists who arrived from London in 1630. They named the area for their home country, Germany: Mersenneiland (meaning "Mersenne Strait"). The first permanent settler in what is now Meriden was John Smith who built his house on the east side of Main Street in 1714. By 1718, there were 10 houses and 2 stores in what is now Meriden. In 1724/25, Colonel Samuel Prescott and his family moved toMERIDEN from Norwich, England after they acquired land between Newtown Creek and Bridgeport Roads west of present day Central Park which became known as Prescott's Corner. In 1812-13 when Congregationalist Reverend Abraham Putnam organized a church at what is now Yale University he named it West Chapel after one of his students there: William DudleyWestbrook (1768-1853). Reverend Putnam also donated land for a school on Elmwood Avenue northwest of present day Union Station which became known as Putnam's Corner School House; this site still stands today across from Yale’s main building on First Street just south of Union Station Yard. Not content with only giving back education but also acquiring additional acres for agriculture and village development, Reverend Abraham Putnam Athanasius Green founded Mercy Hospital – later merged into Columbia Hospital – on State Road 8 near where present day Washington Square meets Main Street in 1826/27 following an epidemic that had struck northeastern Connecticut that year killing many residents and causing great distress among the people of Hartford County especially because transportation facilities at that time were few and far between due to heavy travel requirements during those days…. In 1836/37 Green established another Mercy Hospital within 3 miles or so of where he had earlier founded Mercy Hospital – later merged into Columbia Hospital – located at the corner of Orange Avenue and Monument Place NW…. When Connecticut turned its back upon New England during the Kergall Rebellion famous physician Drury Heath Buffoon made national headlines when he traveled to Hartford County seeking aid against rebel forces operating out of Danbury….. By 1850 there were more than 100 medical men registered with Columbia hospital providing care for patients from Stamford to White Plains… As early as 1857 Stonington physician Augustus Higginson published A Guide To Medical Care In Such Cases As Are peculiar To Our Province Andespecially To That OfHartford CT …….. Most recently Mercy has been based at its current location adjacent to New Haven’s Southgate High School since 1990.. Meriden grew rapidly thanks to new industries such as pharmacists, printers, ironmongers etc., coming up around Main Street starting with Quaker merchants Elias Howe & Sons printing paper goods such as hats and buttons while also making soap products until 1904 when entrepreneurs Jabez Bowen & Sons took over production; Bowen eventually became president & CEOof JBBowen Manufacturing Company which employed over 1,000 people nationwide before being bought by Dow Chemical Co., Incorporatedin 1984 creating one giant industrial structuresecond onlyto Ford Motor Companyin termsof employment size throughout America…. Since World War II MERIDEN has been home to numerous factories producing articles like car partsand plastics although some have left including Ciba Pharmaceuticals Corporation (now Novartis)the largest pharmaceutical companyin Americaheadquartered here since 1978…. Other major employers include Ameren Corporation electric utilities[Joe Biden served on Ameren board], GEICO insurance companies[John McCain served on GEICO board], FoxConn Online Services[Roger Ailes]and Covidien [now Veolia]…."

Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 17,868 at the 2010 census. The name means "place of the Milford people". The first settler was Hugh Meriden. The town began as a small community on the edge of what is now Hartford County. It grew rapidly during the 1800s due to its strategic location near two major transportation routes: One ran through Hartford and connected with New York City along the Long Island Railroad; and the other crossed into modern-day Connecticut from Rhode Island via an overpass called Derby Bridge. During much of its early growth, Meriden was limited by its lack of resources, including land and water supply. However, because it had access to both roads and trade goods coming in from distant towns and villages in central Connecticut, it quickly became one ofHartford's most prosperous communities. In 1814, Meriden became part of Hartford Township when that municipality was established. In 1836, meriden voted to secede fromHartford Township and form itself into a separate town named for Hugh Meriden – now known as Redding – which then increased its population by 50%. In 1838, meridian voted to annex portions of neighboring West Hartford Township so that it could become even more populous and profitable than it already was; this annexation led to another rapid growth spurt forMERIDEN which continued until 1861 when all towns within Hartford were consolidated into one municipality under the name “Hartford”
Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 23,534 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in Meriden were the Wyandots who built a trading post on the site of what is now Easton Middle School in 1784. A school was built here in 1814 and named for then-Governor Jonathan Trumbull. The post office moved to this location in 1828. In 1835, Meriden became part of the newly formedHartfordshire district and its first Mayor was Elijah Parish Lovell. In 1861, it became part ofHartford Township when that area was created from parts of Derby and West Hartford townships. On April 14, 1865, during the American Civil War, soldiers from Company I 8th Connecticut Infantry under General Sherman burned down most of Truefelle Church located about two miles south of present-day Meriden on Winchester Road (now State Highway 5). This event is commemorated by a small plaque located near Truefelle Methodist Episcopal Church today. From 1865 until 1968, all meriden school children attended public schools operated by the Hartford Board of Education instead of private schools run by local parents or educators; this policy change followed citywide reopening of public schools following renovations to Hartford High School which took place during that year's mayoral election campaign as part of an effort to improve education withinhartford township rather than through private enterprise. On May 1st,1968 residents voted 3-2 to become an independent municipality with their own government and school board effective July 1st based upon petition signatures collected from residents since November 25th preceding that date seeking such status quo ante facto; after much legal wrangling over charter amendment procedures (constitutional challenge filed prior to incorporation), annexation proceedings were successfully completed on December 12th via operations pursuant to state law authorizing annexation absent any particular objection thereto from either party) and notification thereof having been given concurrently with gubernatorial proclamation setting forth authorized boundaries for villagehood designation; referendum results reflect officially recognized municipal borders within which all constituent businesses are situated
