Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 14,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of theHartford–New Haven–Bridgeport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Meriden settlers arrived in 1634 and they named their town after the ancient Roman city of Mediolanum (modernMilan). In 1764, the British evacuated all but a small detachment of troops from Hartford following a panic over an attack by French colonists on that city. Meriden was incorporated as a borough on March 25, 1802. The borough seat moved to West Hartford in 1912. The rise of industry during the 20th century led to increased manufacturing activity in Meriden and other towns within the Bridgeport-Norwalk-Bethlehem–Easton Combined Statistical Area (CSA). This growth has caused many streets and businesses to be renamed or changed with respect to their original name or origins; some such examples are First Street in Bridgeport becoming "Old Main Street", Second Avenue becoming "Ivy Boulevard", Third Street becoming " Neil Road" after Neil Armstrong became one of America's first astronauts, and Eighth Avenue becoming "Broadway". According to the 2000 US Census, 15% of Meriden's population were foreign born residents; this number had grown to 27% by 2006. Most recently, 10% of residents were not American citizens as reported by the US Census Bureau for 2008. Meriden is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 24,605 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Meriden County and the largest community in the town. The name derived from its location on the western border of Hartford County, between Hartford and New Haven. The first permanent settler in what would become Meriden was Nicholas Bezek in 1636. His family moved to Meriden from Bohemia some time before that. In 1793, Francis Wayland bought land in present-day Meriden from Nicholas Bezek for £500 (over $10,000 today). He named his new settlement after his father-in-law, John Wayland of Hadley, Massachusetts. By 1800, Wayland's son Amos had also settled in what would becomeMeriden; he renamed it Northampton after his home county in England. In 1806 Samuel Morse established a mill on the upper Connecticut River near modern day Northampton; this was one of the first mills built west of the Appalachian Mountains. Morse later donated land to build an academy and college at Meriden which became known as Yale University (now Yale University School of Medicine). The town motto is "Et unum sint" or "One is all". One major event during these years that shaped Meriden's identity was when troops led by Major General Israel Putnam burned down an Inn at West Center Street and Main Street on November 12th 1812 during their raid into rural Connecticut to seize arms supplies being transported through Milford[2][3] This event helped solidifyMeriden's role as a separate incorporated town within Hartford County rather than just part of it as it had been since its founding.[4] The population reached 27,000 by 1830,[5] but declined thereafter until increasing numbers were attracted to urban areas such as New York City and other Northeastern cities during Reconstruction period following Civil War era (1865–1877). In 1871meridian Borough created municipal boundaries without any reference to neighboring towns with populations over 5 hundred because they felt that meridian growth had outstripped local growth rates[6]. As residents increasingly relied upon city services for goods and transportation away from their homes due to expanding downtowns throughout Hartford County,[7] many businesses relocated or closed within meridian borders; this caused concern among some officials about loss of economic vitality withinMERIDEN itself[8]. However, despite some challenges posed by growing suburban populations adjacent to meridian neighborhoods[9], MERIDEN has continued its rapid growthrate over recent decades – reaching a peak population size of 30,089 people according to2010 census
