Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 24,482 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Greater Hartford Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Meriden was Nicholas Congdon who arrived on April 12, 1659. He and his wife Susannah founded Congdon's Farm on what is now Main Street. From this farm, Congdon and his son-in-law George Higginson began to trade with other nearby villages for goods they could not bring from London or New England. In 1701, John Morse moved to Meriden from Westford and began trading with the area as well. By 1800, Morse had built a gristmill on State Road 2 south of the present day intersection of Washington and Main Streets. In 1866, when Meriden became part of Hartford County, it consisted of only four houses scattered around Bushwick Road east of present day North Avenue; by 1912 there were over 100 residents in the town center alone. The main street through which today's residents travel (Washington Street) was developed primarily during this time period as a commercial hub with several stores and a post office located along its length. Meriden, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 15,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Hartford metropolitan area. One of the first settlements in what is now Meriden was a small village called Willingboro on the south bank of the river Meriden near modern-day North Meriden. In 1638, English settlers by the name of Hutton built a house on what is now Park Street and began to trade with Native Americans. By 1647, they had built a larger frame building which still stands today as one of the earliest buildings in what would become Meriden. The town's first public meeting was held on December 12, 1648 by resolution from selectmen John Wise and Edward Winslow aboutforming an election for representatives to assemble within three weeks to consider measures for founding new townships in Hartford County. The vote failed 3-2 with only Edward Winslow dissenting due to his belief that no other township could be founded until Willingboro became merged into Hartford Township. In 1795, when Connecticut became an U.S. state, Meriden voted against secession from America because it felt that too much legislation would be required to carry out such an act without their participation and feared that it would upset Great Britain more than it already had done through its colonies in America (most notably through New Hampshire). A group of local businessmen formed "The Committee for Betterment ofMeriden" to promote improvements in the community including improving roads and bridges; creating schools; promoting agriculture; and erecting housing units which are still standing today including several notable examples such as Poultney Homebuilders' Building #1 & #2 located where Greenpoint Village currently stands (now known as apartment building Gristedes Development Group) On November 20th 1824, after years dedicated to improvingMeriden with little success,- selectmen Samuel Morse and Augustus Kelley created "The Academy", later renamed "Harvard University". This institution groomed future educators such as George Washington Carver who attended beginning with instruction starting on October 3rd 1828 before graduating magna cum laude in 1840 becoming one of America’s most wellknown agricultural scientists
Meriden was founded in 1635 by Samuel Uniacke and his wife, Rachel. The town was named after the river Meriden which ran through it. The Uniacks were a Quaker family and their first home was on the now demolished lot that is now known as Church Street. In 1768, the town became part ofHartford County and continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1824. The center of town was originally called Market Square, but was renamed MERIDEN in 1864 due to the city’s incorporation into Hartford County.Meriden has had many businesses over the years including Sears, Roebuck & Co., Jiffy Lube, Grits BBQ, Verizon Wireless and HSBC Bank
