In 1765, Amos Brown purchased the mill from Swenarton and continued to operate it until 1827 when he sold it to James Higginson In 1828, Higginson made Meriden his home and changed its name to "Meriden." He built several stores and houses there before selling them all together to Nathan Lyon in 1846 Lyon founded Yale University there in 1885 and Meriden became one of its earliest communities served by university students. Since then, much of what makes Meriden so unique has been maintained by Yale: its small size (the population as of 2010 is 25,376), lack of skyscrapers or other high-rise buildings within walking distance of most residents, and reliance on public transportation – including buses – for most activities outside the campus gates. The community experienced some growth during World War II as result of military housing developments near downtown that were developed through defense contractor Avery Dennison Corporation subsidiary JDSU–owned landTWENTYZERO miles southwest of downtown Hartford on both sides of Long Island Sound between Saylorsville Road ( now State Street )and White Sands Boulevard . These developments are sometimes collectively referred to as "the Hanover Hill Projects." However development stopped abruptly following the war because local zoning regulations prevented further building without prior approval from city hall
