Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 7,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Milford–Norwalk metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1764 by refugees from British America who had fled the Stamp Act. The name "Meriden" comes from Latin and means "place where men-of-war are kept." The first settler in Meriden was Nicholas Popplewell, who arrived in 1764 with his family. He built a small cabin on the edge of what is now Main Street. By 1800, there were twenty settlers living in Meriden. Some of these early settlers were Samuel Morse and his brother David Morse; Isaac Allston; John Smith; Robert Treatius; Eli Whitney; and Ebenezer Conklin. After England's repeal of the Stamp Act in 1765, many colonists decided to stay and start their own communities instead of returning home again under English rule. In 1807, John Hammons purchased land east of Main Street from Nicholas Popplewell for $1 per acre ( ). Hammons named his new community after himself – Hammonstown – and began to build houses there. In 1811, he donated land west of Main Street to form a larger village called Westville which became an important commercial center during the 19th century because it supported two mills – one owned by Samuel Morse and another by Whitney & Company – as well as several churches and schools. During the Revolutionary War years, Meriden played an important role as a military post guarding New Haven against French incursions into Connecticut River Valley territory held by British forces until they surrendered at Saratoga Mountain on July 8,1777. On November 30, 1779 General George Washington appointed Captain Amos Eaton commanding Post No 4 at Hammonstown to lead a force against French forces besieging Poultney Bridge near present day Easton while Major Elias Howe guarded Fort Stanwix along with about 100 other soldiers garrisoned at Meriden Barracks across river from Poultney Bridge Aftermath: The Battle Of Northampton Heights resulted when Lt Colonel Nathanael Greene’s brigade under Major General Sir Henry Clinton attacked Captain Amos Eaton’s detachment led by Captains Lewis Cass[Morse] and Jonathan Trumbull[Westville], resulting in nine killed/ten wounded including Captain Eaton himself with severe injuries received while galloping back to Post No 4 following successful repelling attack on bridge
Meriden was founded in 1795 by the Mayflower Compact settlers. The town was named for John Meriden, an early settler. In 1825, Meriden became a town of its own and was incorporated as a city in 1917.
