The Gun Lock company was founded by three men - William Tilton (owner), George Witte (vice-president) and Samuel Colt - on December 3rd, 1865 at Noontowne New Market near Meriden Center Mall. The Gun Lock shop started out with two pistols - a model 1851 Colt revolving revolver and an 1870 Colt Single Action Army rifle - but soon began producing revolvers for sale to farmers and others who needed them to protect their homes from robbers or burglars during night raids orieves may make unannounced visits without warning homeowners about coming so close to their residences; these were known as " Raid robberies ". This law marked the beginning of mass self-defense against crime by Americans. From 1886 until 1934, all handgun sales within the US had to be done through licensed dealers who could conduct fingerprint inspections on buyers. In 1934, President Franklin D Roosevelt signed an executive order that eliminated this requirement for handgun sales (except for licences for personal protection). In response to increasing crime rates and gun deaths from suicides and accidents, Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan introduced bills into Congress proposing various measures designed to improve gun safety including creating federal registry of firearms ownership as well as increasing background checks on all firearm purchases. None of these proposals came into effect however due to opposition from powerful NRA lobbyists. Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 31,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Norwich–Bridgeport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Meriden were Quakers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1638. The township was formed on July 1, 1718 and named for John Meriden, an Englishman who had settled there in 1635. On March 10, 1814, when Hartford County was created from parts of Windham and Danbury Townships, Meriden became one of the towns within its boundaries. The first store in what is now Meriden opened in 1792 and it continued to be the leading business until 1912 when it merged with the Mercantile Exchange Company Store located at 111 Main Street to form the present-day Mercantile Exchange Building (now known as State House). In 1875, a post office called "New Beginnings" was established and remained open until 1902. The townspeople purchased land surrounding the old market house on Avenue A which served as their new downtown square until 1924 when they built a new courthouse on Market Street which still stands today; this building remains one of only two remaining examples of early municipal architecture in Connecticut. In 1925, Judge Lowell Prentice married Esther Abbott deeding her place "Betty Place" to her friend Alice Morse Cook (1872-1943) for use as a home away from home for judge's family during their vacations abroad; Betty Place currently serves as headquarters for Judicial Council of Connecticut since 1985. On October 7th 1909 local resident James Fenton set up a small gas station near where he lived on Main Street with his brother-in-law Sam Skinner and Alfredo Farnese (known locally as Tony), both men working day jobs to support themselves while they built a small gas station/marketing kiosk that would become known as 'Fenton's'. This building still stands today next door to State House on Market Street - originally used by Fenton's taxi service before becoming attorney general's office records storage beginning in 1907 until 1974 under then AG Edward Messels' ownership/management - serving also as studios for local photographer Harry Houdini starting in 1923 until his death six years later; Houdini also performed some secret shows here between 1923 and 1928 using equipment stored here including his own private car garage). In 1935 Frank Alvord opened his first restaurant called 'Alvord's', located along Main Street south of First Avenue between Highways 9A & 9B - this restaurant would remain open through 1969 when it closed due to changes within the Alvarado family ownership/management including several moves into larger buildings nearby on Highways 9A & 9B though operations continued intermittently through 1984 inside then newly renovated Alvord Theatre fronting Meetinghouse Road across Meetinghouse Park from Yale University School Of Medicine beginning May 1985 thru 1988 consolidating functions formerly housed therein within newly remodeled Yale School Of Medicine facilities having previously been operated separately by then Assistant Dean Samuel Eliot Alvarado (1966-'94) with former Headquarters relocated thereto prior thereto from Dodge Hall onto College Avenue adjacent thereto) during 1989-'90 academic year); finally closing Sept 1990 following restructuring within parent company Golden Arches Restaurants Inc.; alllater operations insidenewly renovated Yale School Of Medicine facilities resulting ultimately IN profitable operation till status change TO SELF-SERVICE GAS STATION circa 1995.)
Meriden was first settled by the Native Americans in the area now known as Connecticut. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who landed on Long Island in 1524. By 1614, Meriden had become a part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1664, English colonists arrived in what is now Connecticut and began to settle the area. The town of Meriden was founded in 1719 by Captain John Smith and named for him.
