Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-New Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Meriden was Nicholas Merrill who arrived in 1664 and built a small cabin on the site of modern day Meriden. Merrill's land passed through several family names including Putnam, Goodrich, Purdy and finally Merrill until it was sold to George Prescott in 1701. The first store in what is now Meriden opened its doors on Main Street in 1702. For many years there were few opportunities to purchase goods outside ofHartford so farmers made do with whatever they could find locally or brought over from England. In 1814, Driggs Packard bought some land east of the river and began growing corn and raising cattle which he transported to New London for sale. By 1830, packards had abandoned their farmstead near present day Fairfield for good as new towns had arisen around them – this led to the name change for Meriden when it became an incorporated Village in 1835. The early 19th century witnessed great changes withinMeriden as developers laid out streets and built more homes while businesses flourished due tomerchandise trade with neighboring towns such as New London and StamfordBridge across the river .During this time many young men fromMeriden went off to fight duringthe American Civil War (1861-65) before returning home via steamboats upriver towards Hartford In 1892 resident John Fenton founded Fenton’s Jewelers which continued operations until 1954 In 1925 the post office moved from Easton Village into what is now downtown Meriden after being moved twice previous year due to increasing population density .Today house number 9 on Main Street still stands as one ofMERIDEN’S PREMIER HOTELS
Meriden was founded by Samuel Morse in 1795 as a small settlement on the banks of the Meriden River. The first post office opened in 1814, and the town became a full-time resident in 1835. In 1862, the Connecticut General Assembly passed a bill providing for meridian lines to be drawn through the town on both sides of the river. The townsite was annexed to Hartford in 1907.
