The town of Meriden, Connecticut is located in eastern Connecticut. The population was 8,987 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-Meriden-West Hartford Combined Statistical Area and is included in the New Haven-Hartford-East Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Meriden was John Mandeville who came from Normandy in 1165. He founded a small hamlet on the side of a mountain called "Mendon," which he named after himself and his home county of Devon. On May 22, 1664, when England became an English colony,mandeville sold his land to Samuel Sloat for £2 per acre. In 1785, Captain John Smith explored the area around present day Meriden and determined it to be an excellent place to settle because of its fertile soil and strategic location between Hartford and Westchester County on one hand and New York City on the other hand. After exploring some more this area, Captains Daniel Noyes and James Cook visited Meriden in 1795 while they were on their way back from visiting Niagara Falls. They recommended that this area be explored more as it looked like potential lands for settlement by Americans rather than just Europeans due to its strategic position with easy access to both major cities. In 1803 Charles Brockden Brown purchased Mandeville's land from Sloat for $8 per acre including water rights which made it even more valuable as a site for development because it had no Indian occupants at that time! Brockden Brown built a log cabin here in 1804 which served as his headquarters until he moved upriver to build much larger structures further downriver near Springfield where he set up government offices. When Connecticut became a U.S state in 1818, Brockden Brown was given additional land east of Meriden river along with lots belonging to Amos Adams & Richard Stockbridge who donated these Lots 1 & 2 (now known as Main Street) to form Adams street north thereof; thence by straight line or course through saidAdams street into said meridian; thence by compass degrees through said meridian unto Greenwich village aforesaid; thence southwesterly by compass degrees through said village unto Middletown beyond: And all that parts lying within twenty miles square thereof inclusive: Which lot No 4 layeth next upon lot 3 mentioned before [itself] being bounded thereby by right lines drawn between those two]. In 1830 Samuel Colt arrived here from Norwich Conn., bringing firearms largely responsible for making America’s west frontiers during this time period Two years later Augustus Saint George Tucker bought part of Brockden Brown’s original holdings thus becoming owner/operator of what would become known as “Tucker’s Mill” today – one of only three surviving commercial buildings from early 19th centuryMeriden By 1840 there were over 100 residents living here with about 60 businesses including tanneries, gristmills and blacksmiths plus several churches including First Congregational Church (now Stonington United Methodist Church) built around 1800 By 1870 there were over 400 residents living here with 130 businesses including five tanneries (one still operating), six gristmills (two still operating), four blacksmiths (one still operating), three churches (including First CongregationalChurch now Stonington United MethodistChurch), eleven stores and six inns catering mainlyto local farmers
