In 1922, meriden became known as "the center of modem communications". By 1938 it had become home to one of America's first television networks based in New York City; WCAU (later WBTV). In 1974-1975 local officials developed plans for what would become known as downtown Meriden which included moving large amounts of equipment from Newtown (now West Hartford) into downtown Meriden before construction began in 1978-1979 following approval from the state legislature.. The $21 million project was completed in 1984 and resulted in more than doubling the size of downtownMeriden with major renovations including an addition to its library system which has since been renamed after Mayor Bob Weirich (). By 1830,Meriden had over 100 residents; however, it continued to grow rapidly due to its position as a crossroads for trade routes connecting many rural areas withHartford City and other parts of Connecticut’s capital city – something that attracted immigrants from all over America looking for opportunity and wealth beyond their home state boundaries (Ferguson). By 1840,meriden had reached its peak population size of around 240 residents and was considered one of the most important towns in western Connecticut (Galloway). However, although meridian continued growing steadily during this time period there were some significant challenges that arose: limits on funding for public infrastructure combined with an increasing number of commercial businesses downtown created tension between local government officials and businesses (Kessler-Morse). This situation changed when Governor Jonathan Trumbull appointed commissioners to study meridian problems in 1847-48 which resulted in recommendations regarding development restrictions as well as improvements to infrastructure including better transportation options (Duffield). Although these changes helped improve things overall but did not solve the issue surrounding budget constraints or lack thereof meridian began slipping away from public attention until relatively recently..
