In 1765, Englishman John Winthrop founded Fall River Colony south of modern-day Meriden on what is now eastern border of Suffield Township. After Winthrop's death some colonists took over his land but others continued to grow food there until 1819 when they abandoned their settlements due to drought and competition from settlers east of Newtown Valley. In 1811, Samuel Morse established a telegraph line between New York City and Boston throughMERIDEN It would not be possible for people living near communication lines at that time so much did voice mail exist back then! In 1828 MERIDEN had its first store when Elijah Lovegood opened the First National Bank building across from Swan Library on Main Street

It is the largest town in Hartford County and the second most populous municipality in the state after Bridgeport. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Meriden were Dutch settlers who founded a trading post on the Raritan River in 1614. The Englishman John Winthrop arrived on May 10, 1630 and built his house just east of present-day Meriden's downtown square. In 1639, Increase Mather established New England's second college ( Harvard University), which became one of America's leading institutions of learning. In 1837, when Hartford County was created from parts of Middlesex and Fairfield counties, Meriden was annexed by Hartford as part of that county's growth into an statewide city. When New Haven becameHartford City in 1868, Meriden continued to be part of that city until it was merged into the larger municipality on January 1, 1974. Meriden was first settled in 1635 by English colonists. The town was named for the Meriden River, which flowed through the town. The first stores and homes were built on the west side of the river. By 1825, Meriden had a population of about 2,500 people. In 1881, a canal was built to bring water from the Connecticut River to Meriden. The town became an incorporated city in 1903. On July 1, 1948, the city limits were expanded to include parts of Hartford County.
