Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Norwalk Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of the town comes from the Meriden River. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Meriden was made by John Smith in 1614 when he and his party reached what is now Farmington Hills by way of Long Valley Creek. He named it after his home town of Monmouthshire, Scotland. The first post office in what is now Meriden opened in 1784 and remained open until 1892. At that time it was within Hartford Township. On October 20, 1795, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington set up camp on high ground overlooking present-day downtown Meriden for two days to take advantage of its excellent location for artillery observation purposes (). The site that became DowntownMeriden was developed as a commercial district around this time and retains some markers from that period including a large wharf used to store goods arriving by sea on board ships coming into New Haven Harbour (). Many buildings still remain throughout DowntownMeriden including The Gilded Age Theatre (now called Merrill Place), which used to be the largest theater in New England before it burned down in 1916; Town Hall (), which replaced an earlier structure built in 1798; and Fairfield Bank (), which has been located at 4 Main Street since 1907. AfteroultogetherMeriden had 10 stores () by 1800 but declined thereafter because of competition from larger towns closer to Hartford (). However, smallpox epidemics starting around 1815 began wiping out entire villages near Boston so nearby Stamford got busy developing new markets for their produce (). In 1827 Stamford merged with neighboring Watertown to formHartford City (). With growth came increased development pressures so on July 1st1846the genial Nathan Hale () offered land east of Main Street (then known as Front Street) for purchase by settlers who would establish a village thereon containing about 100 residents (). Some did moveIn 1850new steamboats arrived making transportation more available; however no village emerged due largely to competition from larger towns such as Canaan (later Norwalk) even though they were many miles away and had better infrastructure."In 1850meridian had 9 stores outof 108 total" while Norwich had 12 outof 30 total." By 1860 meridian's populationhad plummetedto just 5 people

The manufacture of firearms attracted a number of patriotic Shirtmakers who produced both civilian and military firearms products including rifles and shotguns. During World War II many American manufacturers decided to do all they could to support their war efforts by producing patriotic t-shirt slogans like “I love my job because I make guns for people who love them” or “NRA: Keep America safe from harm” which helped fuel demand for these products among soldiers and civilians alike. After the war ended many companies turned their attention back to civilian garments but some NRA members continued making prints featuring NRA members wearing gear from service member casinos around the country until well into the 21st century

The first European American settler in what would become Meriden was James Brewer who came from Bristol, England in 1638.
