In 1818, John Wesley founded a Methodist church here and named it after his predecessor as pastor of Great Britain's second largest city, Manchester. In 1829, President James K. Polk sent Representative Silas Wright to Meriden to campaign for him on a platform that called for creating an agricultural school in Meriden which would train farmers for American production. The school never materialized but Wright's visit led to other development in the town; particularly, growth of agriculture and ranching during what is now known as the Agricultural Revolution in America. During World War II, local manufacturers produced munitions such as gasoline fumes and incendiary shells used by Allied forces during the European Theatre of Operations (ETO). After1945 many people left Meriden for jobs elsewhere in Connecticut or New York City; however, some who remained have continued manufacturing throughout this century. Today most residents are engaged either directly or indirectly in various types of business or professional activity including education and health care services:Meriden has been ranked among "America's Most Working Towns" by Forbes Magazine several times since 2000 (including twice consecutively from 2006-2008). The North Branch School District operates public schools serving students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade along with one high school which provides continuation education into ninth grade until graduation.. There are also private academies available within walking distance to provide additional educational opportunities not typically found within public schools

Today, Meriden has many businesses that operate within its borders such as Verizon Wireless, PepsiCo, Ford Motor Company, Avon Products, Toll Brothers Creamery (now known as Ben & Jerry's), Staples Center (now home to the NBA's Brooklyn Nets), Walmart Supercenter (now home to Sears) and Honda Odyssey dealership all of which have their own restaurants inside or outside of their stores respectively. Additionally there are several golf courses located within walking distance of the town center including Meriden Country Club which has been open since 1917 and Bridgeport Golf Course which opened in 1951.
