The first white people to arrive in what is now Meriden were traders and farmers who established trading posts on the Mystic River in 1664 and 1667. By 1701, there were over 100 settlers living in the town. In 1714, Connecticut Colony grantedmeriden township privileges by charter and also authorized two schools. In 1805,the town became a town under state statute passed as part of the Abolitionist Movement that sought to end slavery throughout New England. In 1828,Meriden voted to annex most of Newtown Township to form Meriden Village Improvement District No. 2 (MVID 2). MVID 2 developed many commercial enterprises including a brewery and grocery store which remain in operation today as Oneonta Brewing Company LLC., one of America's oldest small brewers On November 5th 1860, during American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell discovered an abandoned Union munitions depot located near present day Meriden while attacking UConn’s main campus on Mount Stonington Road south of downtown Hartford After learning about this strategic discovery from his subordinates Ewell ordered his men to burn down all evidence of their past occupation before withdrawing from the battle shortly afterwards The Depot site remains an unmarked landmark today
