On October 15, 1824, it merged with Springfield to form Springfield–Hartford Township. On February 14th 1870, Hartford Township formed into its present boundaries when Montgomery County was created from parts of PlainFIELD Township and Derbyburgh Township., The population growth during the late 20th century was due to waves of immigrants coming to work in manufacturing jobs throughout Eastern Connecticut; however since 2000 there has been a steady decline due to retirements among previous generations along with suburban migration outwards within Greater Hartford Area

The city is located on the shore of Long Island Sound and is bordered by New Haven to the south, West Hartford to the east, Bridgeport to the north and Stamford to the west. The first permanent settler in what is now Hartford was Nicholas Lesser who built a log cabin on land that he acquired from John Stoddard in 1685. The first town meeting occurred on February 13th, 1687 when twelve residents voted to establish a town. On July 1st of that year, they granted themselves perpetual incorporation as “Hartford” with power to vote and make laws. In 1797, during America's Revolutionary War, Hartford sided with Great Britain against America. However, after Victory at Saratoga ended British control over North America (the war had been fought for independence from Great Britain), President George Washington ordered General Howe to remove all British forces from New England–including Hartford –and return it back into American hands on October 12th following an evacuation ceremony at Windsor Castle. It was not until 1814 when Mayor Nicholas Atherton petitioned Congress for appropriations for improvements within what would become known as “Hartford Township” which included buildings such as river mills and a jail that are still standing today. On November 5th 1830 Samuel Morse opened his first telegraph line between Boston and Springfield using horse-drawn carriages which passed through downtown Hartford; this line became known as “Morse's Cable” because it ran through downtown streets named after Samuel Morse himself including Court Street (now State Street), Broad Street (now Asylum Avenue), Third Street (now Dexter Avenue) and Fourth Street (now Orange Avenue). A large cotton factory called Rahway Cotton Mills opened up in 1838 just east of downtown onRahway Boulevard across from Amtrak station along Route 9W near where First United Methodist Church now stands
