In 1664, English colonists founded Derby Plantation on land that later became known as East Hartford. John Winthrop led an expedition to find a new home for his young colony in 1665 and selected what is now east Hartford as his new town site. On July 14, 1666, when Winthrop erected a house at the corner of Church and State Streets, he named it "Hartford." By then many other settlements had been established around the river system; some were called Derby (now Watertown), WestHartford(now Stratford), Newington(later Northampton), Wethersfield(later Wilton). In 1701 Saybrook Colony was established byDaniel Defoe on pensacola Island off Long Island Sound; it would merge into Yale University in 1784. A group of London merchants chartered Two Brothers shipyard on October 12th, 1697 for building warships for Admiral George Pocock during King William's War; this particular shipyard remain open until 1898 when their facility was replaced by Gov't Dockyards under US Navy jurisdiction. The first locomotive built in America arrived here on November 5th 1814 by Amos Stroud & Co., builders of locomotives for Eastern Railroad CompanyRochester Locomotive Works near Main Street northeast corner (then State Avenue)….the town suffered greatly during THE WAR OF 1812 – American forces burned down most buildings including Stroud’s works October 20th 1813 while Stamford Arsenal produced over one hundred cannonry pieces…..The town rebuilt following troop turnover beginning February 1st 1815…. however by 1830 only 8% of original buildings remained standing…..During THE REVOLUTIONARY ERA Hartfords population tripled largely due to migration from eastern England…." On November 5th 1814 harnessmaker Amos Stroud & Co brought over his first locomotive from Rochester Locomotive Works - one years before American independence!
