Hartford, Connecticut is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Connecticut, and the capital of the Hartford metropolitan area. The population was estimated to be 1,545,828 as of 2019.[1] The city is located on both banks of the river Thames Estuary and is bordered by New Haven County to its north and west, Westchester County to its south and east, and Hartford City School District to its southeast. The original name for Hartford was Wethersfield because it lay on a marshy lot near where the Wethersfield River emptied into Long Island Sound. During World War II much production took place at Ford Motor Company’s factory in Derbyville (now Trumbull). American war materials including tanks, planes and guns were produced here from 1941 until 1945[5]. After hostilities ended Hartford experienced rapid growth with new housing estates being erected all around downtown followed by big business expansions such as John Dory’s Ice Cream Parlour,[6] Loews hotel,[7] Pepsi-Cola bottling plant[8], Sears department store,[9] Guggenheim Museum [10], then Universal Studios Hollywood (today known as IMAX) which opened in 1951[11]; while locally based companies continued operations such as Colt Firearms Manufacturing Co.,ECH Packaging Inc., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., TV station WTNH-TV [12], Presbyterian Health System [13], DuPont chemical company [14], Stratford Corporation manufactures agricultural products)[15][16][17][18][19],[20]—making it one of America's most dynamic cities during this period although some aspects have since declined notably its high crime rate (−25 crime rate per 100 000 inhabitants compared to −50 national average) along with large numbers of low-income residents concentrated around Downtown areas[21]). The late 20th century saw an increase in professional sports teams with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady coming from Bridgeport before moving to Massachusetts when he became NFL MVP; while another key player for Connecticut basketball team UConn Huskies played their home games at Madison Square Garden from 1985–2013 before moving back to campus; meanwhile local racing teams such as ARCA Racing began making significant contributions over this period including winning multiple Indianapolis 500 races starting with 1980's Johnny Rutherford driving for Penske Racing Team USA under manager Rick Mears; while domestic aviation giant US Airways moved its headquarters fromNew York City's JFK Airport into what is now called Quirky Plaza near Interstate 495—a development which has led directly to increased traffic congestion throughout central Hartford due to development over decades surrounding Quirkey Plaza—triggering efforts among mayors across the region over recent years to redevelop or demolish portions of quirkily situated Central Business District

The early years of Hartford were difficult; until 1692, there were no bridges across the River Thames, so goods passing through the town could be seized by local authorities if they were not wisely transported across by other means. In 1814, when Connecticut became a state, Hartford became its capital; since then it has been alternately its second or third capital depending on which year falls within each calendar year (the current capital is Bridgeport). In 1795–96 a group of businessmen led by John D'Ambrosio organized what would become known as The Great Migration from rural New England into what is now Hartford – an event that helped spark rapid economic growth in this rapidly developing town. At that time more than 60% of all manufacturing jobs in Connecticut were located here in addition to many professional and clerical positions within government and industry sectors throughout central Connecticut Bayou City (now Watertown). This migration created large numbers of new residents who bought homes near downtown while also initiating some important changes within those same neighborhoods: for example, moving away from small farms towards larger housing developments with better schools and access to improved public transportation options such as streetcar lines opened up during this period which have continued unchanged to this day
