When the first gun was invented in Hartford, Connecticut in 1665, it used a swivel to cock the weapon. The swivel allowed the user to point the firearm in any direction with ease. Pistol grip shotguns, however, became more common in the 20th century and no longer require a swivel on their barrels; they can now be fired with either a straight barrel or an offsetgonal barrel (a barrel that has its bore turned inward).

The Colt’s Patent No. 3111 was released in 1880 and it also featured an adjustable rear sight but it was only able to rotate at a limited range due to its design limitations.

In 1785, Ulysses S. Grant wrote: “If I may add so much—the town I am speaking of has been my boyhood home; it must be allowed that there are some great good men hereabouts (in respect to their political character) which we have not had among us since our revolution”[11]. In 1824, following Indian removal policies implemented by President James K. Polk, many Native Americans living east of the Foote River were forcibly removed to new homes west of the river in what is now Oklahoma and Arkansas under General Andrew Jackson’s order known as "The Kansas Drift". Some 1 million Native Americans were displaced during this period; about half perished due to exposure and disease before being resettled across much of central North America into new lands ruled by white men. This forced migration led to increased competition for land and jobs within small communities throughout New England as Agricultural Society settlers arrived with their livestock and heavy equipment looking for cheap land to clear and plant crops. In 1825–26 Town Meeting voted unanimously to annex part of Farmington (now Goshen), including its Congregational church located on Water Street between Market Square and State House Square – thus forming what would become Hartford
