Hartford, Connecticut is a town in northeastern Connecticut. The population was 27,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-New Haven metropolitan area. Hartford's history goes back to 1624 when it was known as New Haven and was within the jurisdiction of Saybrook. In 1780, after the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution, Hartford became a part of Connecticut and its first mayor was Nicholas Danforth. The city then experienced rapid growth due to new settlers from England and other parts of Europe who arrived during the mid-19th century, followed by waves of immigrants in the early 20th century. Hartford reached its peak as an industrial center with major companies such as Yale University and United States Steel Corporation based there. However, many factories closed along with other manufacturing jobs due to automation and competition from abroad. As a result, Hartford has lost some of its importance as an economic center over recent years. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most important cities in central Conn., hosting several universities including Yale (which relocated from Stamford to downtown in 2001), Brown University (the largest university in downtown Hartford), UMaine (a public research university founded in 1887), Fordham University (one of America's leading Catholic universities) and Fairfield University (the second largest university in downtown Hartford). Hartford has been inhabited by various cultures for thousands of years; Paleo-Indians lived hereabouts before moving off into what is now Vermont or Massachusetts around 1240 AD according to excavations at Swenarton’s Hillcultural Site near present-day Westport.[2] A group led by Englishman Increase Mather came ashore on Long Island on October 14, 1624,[3] upon his return journey following his unsuccessful search for John Winthrop’s Lost Colony which he had attempted two previous years.[4] On December 3rd[5], New Netherland Company official Jameson recorded seeing houses “built outeof_stone_and_mortar” eastward from Manhattan beginning at Newtown river mouth opposite Hackensack[6]. After signing a contract with this group for services rendered,[7][8][9][10] Mather sailed for England aboard HMS Beagle on February 2nd[11]; however his party only made landfall briefly before returning home without finding any sign worth exploring further.* Upon their return trip they found that all but three members died en route: Captain Christopher Jones*, Mr*. Nathaniel Bacon*†† Expedition leader & First Mate John Smith were safe but One hundred Pounds weight baggage consisting mostly oars & tools failed them through extreme weather conditions reaching London January 6th being joined there by another company under Captn Samuel Graves(*). On their arrival they were met with great acclaim both inside [Londoners'] pubs where they were exhibited like cattle before being put into stocks until their ship could be fitted out again – still outstanding even today*†† The experience convinced Jameson that if he could find a passage across America Ihe experiment might have some good consequences….Mather then entered into negotiations with Wm.. Penick about purchasing land eastward…. After much debate between Mather himself & [PENICK’S ENEMY], Publick License No… Gave order for building upon lot selected…..
