The city is the original capital of Hartford County and home to both the State Capitol and the University of Hartford. The first permanent settler in what is now Hartford was Nicholas Bourne who erected a log cabin on Bushkill Creek in 1764. The town was founded by Lieutenant Colonel John Smith as part of an effort to establish British trade posts in what are now New England states. On December 12, 1775, during the American Revolution, General George Washington visited Hartford as part of his campaign against British forces during the Battle of Bunker Hill. That same year (1775), Nicholas Bourne donated land for the construction of a public square and courthouse at what is now downtown Hartford. In 1814–15, when Connecticut became a state following its admission into Confederation, Hartford joined with other towns in forming "the Second City", which grew rapidly due to its new economic opportunities after passage of the Act for Regulating Commerce and Trade (1813). In 1835–36 James Kenehan built one of America's first breweries on modern-day Main Street – one that still stands today – and soon began selling beer direct to consumers through his storefront windows. At that time tap water was only served near churches or government buildings; Kenehan helped provide drinking water for much of central Connecticut until 1855. In 1846–47 Samuel Morse demonstrated electric lighting at a fairgrounds near present day Union Station; this demonstration led to increased commercial development around Morse Square which included several brick buildings constructed between 1848 and 1850 including The Masonic Temple (now One Union Place) and The Hartshorn House (now 333 Canfield Avenue). By 1870–71 more than 100 businesses had opened along Main Street within five blocks of where it meets Harrison Avenue today; this rapid growth created major challenges for civic leaders who were unable to keep up with demand or fund infrastructure expansions necessary for continued success. With increasing social unrest during Reconstruction era (1868-1877), local officials responded by creating new zoning regulations designed to prevent organized crime from flourishing; these measures failed to halt social unrest which eventually culminated in widespread rioting throughout central Connecticut occurred from April 1865 until May 15th 1865 known as "The Great White Riot". On May 15th 1865 Governor Andrew Johnson ordered martial law in response to riots taking place throughout central Connecticut; this order led to increased policing efforts by state police officers instead of municipal officers which contributed significantly to further instability within the community while providing no real solution to underlying problems such as poverty and racism.
