After suffering significant damage during King Philip's War (1562–1604), Hartford regained its prominence under Governor John Winthrop's administration in 1665–66 when he built Fort Hingham on Rte 202 south of town to serve as one of New England's primary defenses against Spanish incursions into Massachusetts and other parts of New England. The city experienced another growth spurt during Queen Annes' rule (1701–1710) because new industries were born out of necessity during that period: heavy manufacturing for munitions during World War I; adventuring by independent settlers seeking wealth along Route 128; and opening up sections of downtown which were previously off limits due to building regulations at the time. During this time, downtown also became known as "the most intelligent section" in Hartford because nearly all businesses within several blocks were either Morristown Coffee House or some other type of industrial establishment that attracted high-quality talent from various walks of life. By 1840, both downtowns had largely replaced each other with only a few scattered commercial buildings remaining between them – an event that is commemorated annually by DowntownHartford Day celebrations which began six years later that fall。 In 1840, Hartwick Place – now Wells Street – was added to the National Register OF Historic Places listings inHartford County, United States; it remains one Of America’s Most Intact Commercial Districts Today (). Aided by wealthy benefactors such as George Peabody & Sons Paper Manufacturing Company founder Amos Stearns () political corruption reached unprecedented levels across municipal governments leading ultimately to receivership under Mayor James Grafton before finally being dissolved by General Assembly led by Cyrus Townsend Hearst (). On July 4th 1867 - just three months after his inauguration - Mayor Grafton ordered troops into central business district following reports martial law had been declared pending further investigation into graft accusations… In 1870 reorganized municipality absorbed former townsNorwich(northwest corner)Wetherington(southwest corner)Andover(east side)) amalgamating these two towns forming what is now called “Hartford” unofficially.. On November 15Th 1871 Greenwich Village merged with present day Old Lyme Village forming what is now known simply as “New Haven” . ....In 1901 both cities seceded from statehood creating “Connnecticut” ............. Hartford, Connecticut is a city in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2010. It is the largest city in the state of Connecticut and one of the most populous cities in New England. The area that now makes up Hartford was first settled by English colonists as part of the Plantation of East Hartford Township on what is now the eastern edge of downtown Hartford. In 1664, Sir John Winthrop founded the town of New Haven and named it for his hometown of Haven in Norfolk, England. From 1814 until 1821, Hartford was part of Congress's 1st District and then 2nd District before being placed within the 3rd District when that district became divided into two parts in 1824. From 1825 to1829 it was part of Congress's 3rd District before joining with 23 other municipalities to form Riverton Township which still exists today as a suburb within Greater Hartford. On January 1, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt established the Municipal Corporation ofHartford which created municipal government for all its constituent townships except Riverton Township which remained under township control until 1959. The city reached its current size when it annexed portions of Riverton Township from neighboring Westchester County on February 14th 1906 and from Southbury Village from Stratford on October 17th 1912. The annexation set off a decades-long process by which each municipality merges with others to create a consolidated city government that covers all or nearly all areas within their boundaries save for small pockets such as Bridgeport and Stamford where village governments continue to exist subject to townwide decisions about various matters including police services and fire protection
