Derby, Connecticut had its start in 1768 when Revolutionary War veterans, including General George Washington and Colonel John Stark, founded Derby Plantation. The town was named for the Derbyshire Parish in England where many of the original settlers came from. The first store opened in 1781 and by 1810 there were five stores and a dozen houses. In 1814, Derby became a town and was known as the " County Seat of Hartford." The first post office was established in Derby on July 12, 1811. The population of Derby reached 2,500 by 1830 and it grew to more than 10,000 by 1860. In 1876, Derby merged with Hartford to form the present-day state of Connecticut. By 1920 there were only 5 businesses left in downtown Derby and most residents had moved away or left the area for other opportunities. However, some residents returned to redevelop downtown derby into an arts center/ entertainment district which is still thriving today.
