In 1713, Increase Mather became the first Baptist pastor in Derby when he moved from Watertown to this location. On November 1st, 1784, Derby became a town when two towns merged: East Windsor and West Windsor both had over 10% of the population but only East Windsor received an official charter from the state government which allowed for its incorporation as a town with voting rights and limited taxing authority within certain limits On May 7th 1814 James Wadsworth purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) east of present day Derby into what would become known as Wadsworth Triangle Park In 1868 Derby was incorporated as a city under state law which allowed for limited taxing authority within certain limits Derby experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its importance as a munitions manufacturing center . The war saw an increase in crime and denigration towards all things German throughout much of Hartford County although some Germans did manage to maintain some level of social status . Despite this negative attention derby continued to enjoy high levels of economic development until around 1990 when young adults began moving out for reasons such as joblessness or changing social norms
