Derby, Connecticut is a small town in northeastern Connecticut that was founded by the Connecticut Colony in 1664. The population of Derby was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Derby is located on the east bank of the River Merrimack and it is bordered to the south and west by Simsbury, to the north by East Hartford, and to the northwest by Watertown. It lies within central Putnam County. The first settler in Derby was Nicholas Goodrich who arrived in 1664 and built a home on what is now Main Street. Goodrich's son John moved his family to Derby from Norwich in 1668. In 1702, Samuel Morse established a sawmill here which became one of America's leading manufacturers of electrical goods until it went bankrupt in 1892. In 1775, Colonel Jonathan Trumbull organized an militia company called "The White Mountain Boys" for service against British forces under General George Washington during the American Revolution. The unit participated in several skirmishes before being disbanded on October 10th after only six weeks of service. In 1814, Derby became part of Connecticut when that state seceded from Great Britain following its war with France. That year, Derby also received its own government with Andrew Johnson as its first mayor. The city experienced rapid growth due to land speculation and development around Lake George – including an extensive canal system – but declined thereafter until the 1960s when some redevelopment led to a population increase of over 50%. Today, derby boasts more than just a small-town feel; it has become known for its wide variety of cultural activities such as music festivals (such as Apple Blossom Festival), art exhibitions (including one showcasing Native Americans), classical concerts (the Symphony Orchestra presents performances every month at Pritchard Auditorium), food & drink options (various restaurants offer local cuisine), shopping Mall located adjacent to downtown with several smaller stores nearby giving residents close access to all types of services without having to leave their residential area; as well as many large businesses such as Lowe's Hardware store which anchors downtown along with two other major retailers: Macy's / Neiman Marcus/ Sears / JCPenney/.
