Gun targets have been a part of Derby, Connecticut since the 1800s. The first target rifle was built in 1826 by Isaac Sennett. The original targets were made from wood and cloth. In 1851, Phebe Vining founded the Derby Rifle and Pistol Club and began to make new types of targets. She designed a target that could be shot at multiple distances, which became known as a “Vining Target”. The first gunshot sounds recorded in Derby came on July 10th, 1852 when William Henniker fired his gun at an apple tree near the corner of Main and Green Streets. This event is often cited as the beginning of gun regulation in Connecticut. A few years later, on November 1st, 1855, Sheriff John Warner shot an animal at a game preserve off Norwich Road. This event is also sometimes cited as the beginning of gun registration in Connecticut. In 1861-1862, Union troops invaded Derby and burned down several businesses including Vining's store (now seats for the town clock). This event caused many people to start using safety guns instead of shotguns or pistols for fear that they would be used against their own families if war continued to break out between America’s two major nations! After the Civil War ended in 1865, it became common for people to gather around family fires to shoot metal balls off trees into groups about 20 feet away from each other for fun. This activity eventually evolved into what we now know as airgun shooting competitions! In 1925-1927, Edwin Sellers organized a shotgun match outside of his drug store at 109 Main Street which would become known as the “Derby Gun Show” It was here that he developed his famous Sellers Bullet - one of the most popular types today! In 1937-1938 David Herron organized a pistol match inside his grocery store at 523 East Orange Avenue which would become known as “Herron’s Gun Show” It was here that he developed his famous Herron Pistol - one of the most popular types today! In 1951-1953 President Harry Truman attended a rifle tournament hosted by Herron inside His Store on State Street which led to enactment of UMCSA (Uniform Munitions Code Amendment) - making it illegal to purchase any type of ammunition not created by government approved companies! Afterward many more businesses picked up supplies from this source before finally being discontinued due to overproduction in 1957!

The history of Derby, Connecticut begins with the arrival of the British in 1664. The town was founded by a group of English colonists who arrived on May 5th, 1664. They named their new town after Lord Derby, who had granted them land in what is now Connecticut. The town grew rapidly and soon became a major center for trade and commerce. In 1784, Derby became a state capital and its population increased to over 10,000 people. It remained an important center until the mid-19th century when it began to decline as manufacturing relocated to larger towns in New England.

It began as part of New Haven Colony in 1634 and became a separate township in 1814. Derby's nickname is "The Birthplace of American Quakerism." The first white people to visit Derby were the Conte brothers on October 30, 1634. They left behind drawings that show how the area looked before they arrived. In 1701, John Winthrop founded The Congregational Church in Derby and it remains one of the most important churches in the town today. In 1814, Derby was made a separate township due to its strategic location on both sides of Route 9 north-south and east-west which made it an important commercial center for the area. As more people moved into Derby from other parts of Fairfield County, road repairs became necessary to maintain traffic flow and keep goods coming into or leaving derby respectively. Today, derby has evolved into a vibrant community full of cultural attractions such as its own independent film festival (the Derbyshire Film Festival), multiple art galleries including one run by an award-winning artist called "The Glass Menagerie," five restaurants including three awarded AA Rosette Awards for excellence in cuisine - four upscale steak houses and one casual Italian restaurant - two bowling alleys - an ice cream parlor - four small shopping malls across central Connecticut - over 100 businesses active in health & fitness services - 11 secondary schools open to students up to eighth grade with nearly 350 students living within easy walking distance of all nine public high schools; six libraries; two professional sports teams: the Derby Rams baseball team who are members of the Eastern League (formerly Eastern Division) and their larger sister team Hartford Yard Goals hockey club who play in Hockey America Association (HAA) leagues – both men’s ( derogotating football where there are no HAA teams) – both women’s golf courses; twelve miles longato provide ample opportunity for horseback riding; eighteen miles long hiking trails through forests and meadows bordering Dayton Valley National Wildlife Refuge make it possible for hikers/bikers/joggers/rollerbladers to spend time outdoors year round As well as its rich history, culture & traditions which can be seen throughout every aspect of life here such as quakerism & agriculture

Derby, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. Derby is the second most populous town in Hartford County and the seventh most populous municipality in New England after Boston, Providence, Worcester, Bridgeport, Stamford, and New Haven. Derby is part of the larger Hartford-New Britain metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Derby happened when farmers from Norwich built a log cabin on an abandoned lot near the present day intersection of Main Street and High Street about 1814. The first post office was established in 1825 and named for Colonel John Derby of Norwich who had died two years earlier. A store was also established here in 1828 by David Hurlbut and his brother-in-law Samuel Barton. In 1830 Drury & Sons Auctioneers opened up shop here with a side yard for selling goods to customers on Market Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue which became known as "The Green Mile". It wasn't until 1865 that the town got its own water system when it was annexed into Hartford by the state government under then Governor Oliver Hazard Perry. By 1870 there were already over 100 businesses operating here including 50 tanneries, 20 grocery stores/stores of various kinds (including five hardware stores), 10 millinery stores/factories/, four saddlers' shops/, six printers', twelve blacksmiths/. In 1895 a new department store called "Norman's" opened at 1280 Main Street which still stands today as one of Derby's main commercial attractionscomplete with an extensive gift shop/bargain operation/. It served as home to many local artists during its long history including illustrators Edward Hopper and Edward Albee . In 1932–1933 Derby received its first electricity from General Electric Company through their Edison Eddy Project.. After World War II it experienced rapid growth due to numerous engineering projects funded by both federal dollars as well as private donations such as a bypass road being built through downtown that connected with I-95., major housing developments such as The Chase Tower (), multiple shopping malls (), massive industrial facilities (such as Arrow Mills Paper Mill) among others.. Today there are over fifty small businesses active within derby including several art galleries,, three libraries,, two restaurants,, one barber shop,, one pet groomer/, four tattoo parlors/, plus many additional services typical of small towns such as ice cream socials., community meetings/villages meetings/, special events like corn dogs night or bingo nights etc...
