The first store opened in 1798 and soon there were two stores, three schools, a Masonic Lodge, a gristmill, a sawmill, four churches (one of which was Congregational), five blacksmiths/forge keepers/smiths, two physicians (Dr. Andrew Ellsworth and Dr. Lewis Hill), four farmers (John Noyes and Jonas Sargent Sr., Isaac Strong Jr., John Strong III and Jonathan Jaffe), three teachers (Grace Kingman Middle School for girls; Mrs. Belle Gibbs for boys; Mrs. Augustus Cole for girls) and twenty-four workers at various mills/farms including brewers Thomas Biddle and James Whitehead as well as leather tanner Edwin Holmes from Vermont among others who followed them into Derby during the mid 1800’s when papermaking replaced woolen spinning as America’s primary export product
Derby was founded in 1636 by the Connecticut River Valley colonists as a small trading post on the Great Lakes. The town quickly grew, and in 1812 it became the county seat of Hartford County. Derby lost its status as the county seat in 1908 when West Hartford became the new county seat.
