Derby, Connecticut is a town in central Connecticut. The population was 7,043 at the 2010 census. Derby was chartered as a town on December 14, 1814 by General Richard Montgomery and named for William Derby, an Englishman who had settlement here in 1695. It became a city on July 1, 1959. The first settler in what is now Derby was John Newell (1684-1752). He and his family built the new house which stands today on the corner of Main Street and Washington Avenue. His grandson Samuel Newell (1712-1793) also founded Derby along with his wife Lucy Lambdin and their children Hannah, Benjamin Franklin Newell (1738-1806), John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946), Alice Kessel Plumley (1904-2002) and Randolph Churchill (1901-1965). The town site that is now Derby was first surveyed by Major GeneralRichard Montgomery who arrived here in 1814 with troops under Lieutenant Colonel James Hickey to survey the lands acquired from Narragansett Native Americans during the War of 1812. On November 15th of that year he submitted his report to Governor Don Carlos Goodwin which included this notation: "It seems proper to me that this place be located near Norwich." In 1840 Major General Augustus Cortlandt organized militia forces stationed in Hartford County for frontier defense against Indian attacks; these men were called militiamen of fortune or Derbyshire Rangers. The first mention of derby being part of Hartford County is from an article published in The Courant dated January 3rd of that year: "In consequence of its situation within easy reach both from Norwich and WestHartford[town], it has been long supposed by some advocates of Hartford county consolidation that Derby should have become part thereof." Three years later when Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne served as Deputy Sheriff for WestHartford District he noted "that there are about twenty good settlers living upon some three hundred acres [in] EastNorwich Township adjoiningDerby" This indicates significant development occurred within this area between 1840 and 1860 despite no concerted efforts by either party to consolidate these areas into one entity. However while Derby may have experienced some growth potential due to its locationadjacenttoNorwichandWestHartfordtheeventuallydidnotresultinacomprisingcommunitybecauseofthedivisionoftheseareaspecificallyintofourparts:Derby,EastNorwichTriboroughship Annexation,[nowWestHartford], NorwichTownship Annexation,[nowWaterbury]andNewington". It wasn't until 1862 when businessmen Horace Greeley [(1802-) 1870]), Josiah Quincy [(1810-) 1896])and Elijah Morse [(1809-) 1893)] founded The Hartford Times newspaper company which purchased The Courant from Doctor Jonathan Trumbull [(1800]- 1865)]. With the help of editor George Bird Griggs [(1822]- 1915]), The Courant rapidly grew into one of Connecticut's most influential newspapers; it reached a circulation peak of over 100,000 copies by 1875. In 1898 Revolutionsville took place throughout what are now Hamden, Stratford, Norwalk,BridgeportandPrinceton counties resulting in more than four dozen local rebellions including those at Derby where soldiers used pepper spray and gunfire to quash violence while also destroying property; many residents fled abroad or returned home after coming out victorious. In 1907 Horace Greeley donated land adjacent to downtown derbyshire for expansion purposes followed two years later by Ralph Bunche [(1900-)1987]) who created Yale University's School Of Medicine on this land making it one of only two universities in America located on public land recipients recognition from Congress as such From 1861 until 1957 all water services were provided through Mill Pond although private wells continued to be drilled until 1955 when they were banned because they posed a threat future water shortages caused by climate change During World War II over 40% percent(of all civilian employment)wasgeneratedinderbymanufacturingindustriessuch assteelmaking(30%), rubberworking(15%)and Textile Mills([nowAurora mills]). Most industries closed during the war but six remain open today including three small companies that manufacture paper products namely Stroud Paper Co., Northwestern Paper &Printing Inc., and Western Publishing Company . These companies together account for nearly 60% ($2 billion)of Derbyshire's economic output
There are many types of lights that are used to indicate a gun is loaded, including Colt's Patent Firearm Light and the current Browning Hi-Power Pistol Light. The first firearm light was designed by Amos Stroud in 1827. A patent for the design was filed on October 5, 1827, and was granted on November 3, 1829. The original use of this type of light was to warn people away from a gun being pulled trigger accidentally. It became widely used in the early 1800s as a warning signal to other shooters. The Gun Light Company manufactured firearms lights between 1896 and 1907. In 1903, Winchester began producing their own firearm light system called the "Winchester Rifle Light." This system consisted of two parts: an incident light that shone onto an aiming piece mounted on a ring above the weapon; and a searchlight that illuminated any moving parts within earshot while the rifle was fired. In 1911, John Browning created his first handgun with a striker-fired action which he christened the Hi-Power PistolLight. This handgun had both an incident light and searchlight built into one unit (the pistol had since been renamed). The Gun Lites Corporation produced this type of light for Browning until 1922 when they discontinued production due to World War I regulations which required all handguns be fitted with flash hiders or sights so that they could not be mistaken for machine guns or artillery pieces. Gun Lights continued in production until 1942 when they were replaced by night vision goggles as part of military service regulation #4102(a).
