Many men who fought for the Union received Medals of Honor or battlefield fame including First Lieutenant Augustus Porterfield (USMC), Second Lieutenant Darius Neely (US Navy), Private First Class Hiram Sibley (2ND UMass Militia Infantry Regiment), Sergeant James Hickey (1st Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry Battalion) and corporal Isaac Hickson (3rd New York State militia regiment). Following Reconstruction following the war – which ended with African Americans becoming citizens – many businesses were closed or changed hands throughout much of downtown derby while white businesses flourished; this period also saw an increasein heavy industry with firms such as Colt Firearms Manufacturing Companybeginning operations north of Main Street eastward into what today is known as West Nile Township . By 1930 most businesses had been closed again except for two: The Masonic Temple & Library which continued to operate until 1957 when it burned down during Hurricane Edna . In recent years there has been an attempt to revive downtown derby with a numberof redevelopment projects underway such as new retail stores along Main Street plus revitalization efforts focused on educationally Oriented Neighborhoods initiatives such as increasing access to arts programming etc..
