Derby's economy depends largely on agriculture and its two primary industries are cheese production and manufacturing of flourishes such as breads, pasta sauce and dressings; both these sectors have seen significant growth in recent years due to increased demand for these products statewide. Other major employers in the municipality include Ford Motor Company’s plants in Derby and Bloomfield Hills; Staples Inc., an American retail giant with more than 2,000 stores across North America; United State Steel Corporation’s plant in Bloomfield Hills; and Intel Corporation’s Trenton campus which employs over 4,000 people employed in engineering and research activities.

Derby, Connecticut is an unincorporated town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 12,512 at the 2010 census. Derby was originally settled by English colonists and became a part of Hartford County in 1666. It was first named Newington after Nicholas Newington, an Englishman who had arrived in 1635 as a member of the Colony of Connecticut. In 1814 Derby was renamed Derby after JohnDerby, 4th Earl of Derby. On July 20, 1816 the town voted to secede from Hartford County and become its own independent municipality under the name "Derby". On November 3rd that year the town passed a referendum asking for independence and received over 60% of the vote. The town charter was created on December 8th that year and it officially became a separate municipality with its own government and economic development plan. The first village meeting took place on January 6th, 1817 and all property within the boundaries of Derby merged into the new municipality. The first mayor of Derby was George Ransom who served from 1817-1819. He married Sarah Whitehead in 1815 and they had two children: George Ransom Jr., born in 1816, and Sarah Ransom (born October 21st 1798), who later served as Mayor herself from 1865-1867 when she also held office as Treasurer/ Auditor for Hartford County The second mayor of Derby was James Hetherington who served from 1830-1834 In 1840 Abraham Lincoln visited Derby while he was campaigning for president
Derby, Connecticut was founded in 1636 by the Hartford people. The town became a part of Hartford County in 1819 and then became ancillary to Bridgeport. It is now a suburb of Bridgeport.
