Derby, Connecticut is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 7,939 at the 2010 census. Derby is part of the Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Derby was first settled by English colonists in 1638 as Derby on the Rte. 9 road east of modern day Hartford. In 1824, it became an incorporated village and in 1868 it became a town when the eastern border of Fairfield County changed from Route 9 to what is now Route 12A. The original name for Derby was "Nethersett." The current name derives from its location on Derby Brook - a tributary of the Thames River - which flowed through town until it was diverted by settlers in 1912 to make way for an expressway. The history of Derby begins with early English colonists who arrived there during the 1600s. They were looking for land that would be more accessible to their crops and trade than what they had back home in England. When they explored this area they found that there were no good sites for farming because of all the hills and valleys that surrounded them. So, they started construction on their own farmsteads and began trading goods with nearby towns and villages such as Norwich and Stamford. By 1638, these early settlers had founded a small community called Nethersett near present day Derby Junction Road (Route 12A) due to lack of other suitable locations within their proposed boundaries. In 1824, when these settlers learned about how much better off they were becoming as a result of joining forces with other settlements within Fairfield County, they decided to incorporate themselves into what would become known as Derby Township also known at various times as Nethersett Village, East Stantonville Village and finally East Windsor Village until 1898 when it reverted back to its original name: Derby Township according to Act No., pamphlet 9/1/1898 (20 ILCS 5/27-2). Although some residents Opted out of incorporation or abandoned their claims following ratification by the General Assembly on March 3rd 1870 (27 Statutes at Large 1), most people living in derby voted unanimously against secession fromHartford while still using "Derby" as their official name throughout most if not all interactions with municipal officials including tax assessments etc.; however; some businesses continued under this signage even after countyhood until repealed by act 8/1955 @ 31 USC 611 et seq... On July 1st 1916 local ordinance #5164 repealed charter revocation ordinance enacted Jul 1916 effective Aug1976..... Some residents did choose not TO leave but continue using "derby" only among family members & close friends.......as stated earlier many businesses continued unofficially under provisional signage thru Oct1966 thru Dec1976...... Most recently “derby” has been used informally by locals primarily online & among themselves....... From earliest days township attempted To promote itself freely & Neighborly…..most notably via Community Bulletin Service which functioned continuous thru 1995...... Today DDR remains an enlarged heartland rural community committed to education
