Danbury is a town in the Connecticut Valley region of southern New England. The population was 9,854 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Hartwick to the north, Danbury Township to the east, Ithaca to the south and Westport to the west. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1636 when Captain John Winthrop landed on what is now Danbury Beach. In 1764, Connecticut granted land to eight towns in eastern Connecticut as part of an effort to attract new settlers. The towns became independent from Danbury and formed their own governments. In 1807, Congress created a new township for those living near Watertown, Massachusetts; this area would eventually becomeHartwick Township. In 1814, another township was established for those living along present-day Route 6 in western Ithaca County; this area would eventually become Westport Township. In 1834, two more towns were created: North Branford (later Hartford) and South Branford (later East Haven). These towns merged with Danbury in 1835 and became one municipality under the name of Danbury

Danbury is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 25,362 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous towns in New England and it is located on the eastern edge of Hartford County. The first settlement in what is now Danbury was made by Obadiah Morse and his family on April 12, 1781, when they set up a small farmstead on land that later became known as Morse Hill. They were soon joined by other settlers, and by 1800 the community had grown to include more than 100 houses. In 1824, Danbury became part of newly formed Hartford County. At its peak during the early 19th century, Danbury was an important commercial center for southeastern Connecticut. A number of businesses grew rapidly here – including two breweries (Curtis & Fryer) and two tanneries (Dorrance Brothers). The town also developed a notable professional class, with many prominent men includingIsaac Watts (the founder of Yale University), Nathan Hale(a U.S. senator from Rhode Island), Thaddeus Stevens (a congressman from Massachusetts), and Horace Mann (the first editor of The New York Times). However, economic decline began to take hold in the late 19th century as manufacturing shifted to factories outside of Connecticut and Danbury lost its importance as a commercial center. With few new businesses coming online or developing significant jobs growth over time, people gradually abandoned the town; its population peaked at 30,000 in 1940 but declined to 25,362 by 2010
The town of Danbury was originally settled by the Lenape Native Americans in the early 17th century. The first white settlers arrived in 1659, when Capt. John Winthrop founded a small trading post on the Connecticut River. By 1675, Danbury had become a thriving community with its own courthouse and militia detachment. In 1701, the town was incorporated as part of Hartford County and began to grow rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two major transportation routes. In 1814, Danbury became one of the original 21 towns in Hartford County when it was created from parts of Milford and East Hartford. During World War I,Danbury played an important role in supplying munitions for the war effort. In 1921, Danbury merged with Derby to form what is now just east of Hartford city limits. Today, Danbury is home to a number of major businesses including North American Paper Company (NAPCO), which manufactures paper products such as flyers and envelopes; Ford Motor Company (FORD), which produces cars and trucks; Jenrette's Supermarket chain; A&P Locally owned grocery store; and First United Methodist Church which is one ofHartford's largest churches and has been serving the community since 1847.
