When Danbury, Connecticut’s first city was founded in 1666, it had no firearms. However, over time the community began to acquiring pistols and rifles from outside sources. By 1835, handguns were being imported into Danbury from Massachusetts and New York City. The Danbury Rifle Club was formed in 1844 and quickly became a leading center for gun training in the town. In 1865, the first military target shoot took place at theDanbury Armory on Park Street. Over time, many other local shooting clubs were formed and participated in events throughout Connecticut. Danbury is home to both the University of Hartford and Yale University. The area that would become Danbury was first settled by natives of the Pequot tribe in 1636. In 1784, a group of English colonists from New Hampshire named themselves the "New England Company" and began developing the land around what would become Danbury. They renamed their new settlement for John Davenport, 1st Viscount La Salle's brother-in-law, who had helped lead them on their journey from New England to North America. The town was founded on April 14th, 1784 by Captain Nicholas Culpeper and his men under charter from King George II of Great Britain as Huntingtonville (later Huntington). The first store opened in 1785 just north of present day Meeting House Square. That year saw also one of history’s earliest school systems when Newtown Academy (now Danbury High School) opened its doors to students at nearby Fort Hill near where today's State Street meets Tyrone Street.. In 1824, the Post Road became available to transportation throughtown and quickly became an important artery for goods moving between Hartford and other towns in western Connecticut During prohibition days in 1919-1920 many businesses closed due to lack of customers or taxation laws that prevented liquor sales within town limits; however some still managed to operate despite this restriction In 1933 Quaker Oats opened its first store here followed by Sears Roebuck & Co., Jiffy Lube Oil Can Factory (now Macy’s), Radio Shack (now RadioShack), Apple Computer Corporation - which moved into a building now occupied by Raytheon Missile Systems - UPS - which moved into another building now occupied by M&M’smetics before being acquired by IBM - all within walking distance from each other Today much remains unchanged with only slight changes throughout decades like: Streets are named after local people such as Judge Abraham Burrows who served on several Town Boards during different periods or Nathan Sorenson who created much decorative art including carvings on streetlights which can be seen today along Route 9 eastward from downtown There are also numerous small businesses located throughouttown including: 4C Coffee –owns one bar inside Meetinghouse Square; Joe’s Pizza –which has been open since 1951; Tim Hortons –a Canada Dry chain with over 150 stores across the country; Capri Sun Fitnesscenter –opened in 1984 next door to City Hall;; BP Gas Station off Route 9 south near Norwich Avenue serves up real gas without having any sign out front letting you know it is not Mobil station because they changed their name back in 1990
