Danbury, Connecticut is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,929 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest municipality in Fairfield County and the fourth largest in Connecticut. Danbury is bordered by Hartford to the south and west, Milford to the north and east, and Bridgeport to the south. The first permanent settler of what would become Danbury was Nicholas Putnam in 1636. In 1784, Daniel Hoadley purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land from John Putnam for $5 per acre. That same year saw the founding of what would become Danbury College as Yale University's only college campus outside New England. In 1837–38 developer Amos Kendall erected a large brick building on Main Street that would serve as both courthouse and town hall until destroyed by fire in 1871. In 1870–71 he began construction of what became known as "The Brick House" which still stands today at 5 Elm Street (). This building served as the first public school house in Danbury Township (later Fairfield County). A post office called Danbury had been established in 1814 but was discontinued due to lack of customers when new postage stamps were introduced that year. The townspeople voted on October 3, 1847 to establish their own post office under the name "Danbury". The first Postmaster General was Moses Morse who served from 1850 to 1861; his successor James Gadsden served from 1861 to 1865. On November 6, 1850 Samuel Tilden received an official charter from Governor Enoch Pratt giving him authority over all towns within Fairfield County with a population over 1,000 people (). With this charter came responsibility for duties such as providing road maintenance and creating local government structures such as townships and wards(). On July 8, 1865 Alfred Ives opened what was then called "The Woolen Mill" on High Street (), which later became one of America's leading woolen mills producing items such as burlap cloths and flannel fabrics (). Ives operated it until it closed its doors in 1907 following World War I; however it reopened soon after with new ownership which continued operations until they went out of business again around 1980 (). Today there are few remaining remnants of this mill complex including parts of an early 20th century dam across High Street (). During World War II many workers tasked with making munitions used nearby factories (now part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor) during off hours or when things got too dangerous at those factories located along Route 9 near Shelton Falls () while working class families lived adjacent to these industries.; some remain unidentified buried nearby today beneath Route 9 pavement material dating back to World War II .
4 constables were killed with pistols at an early morning ball game in 1836. The pistols were brand new and must have been very dangerous to use, as the murderers had no idea who they were shooting at. It is interesting to note that this event took place over two centuries ago and even though handguns are now more common, it still surprises me how much gun violence still takes place in our society!
